Background of the Study
The periodic table is a fundamental element in chemistry education, yet many students struggle to grasp its complex organization and the relationships between elements. In Government Science Schools in Gombe, Gombe State, animated infographics are being developed as a tool to enhance the learning experience. These infographics integrate dynamic animations, interactive diagrams, and visual cues to illustrate periodic trends, electron configurations, and chemical properties in an engaging manner (Ibrahim, 2023). By transforming static, textbook-based representations into lively digital content, animated infographics provide a multisensory learning experience that caters to various learning styles. Research has demonstrated that visual and interactive content can significantly improve student retention and comprehension of abstract scientific concepts (Chinwe, 2024). The proposed system is designed to be accessible on multiple digital platforms, ensuring that students can review content at their own pace and receive immediate feedback through embedded quizzes and interactive elements. This innovative approach not only makes the periodic table more accessible but also encourages students to explore the underlying principles of chemical behavior, fostering critical thinking and curiosity. The project aims to integrate these animated infographics into the existing curriculum, providing teachers with a valuable resource to enhance lesson delivery and stimulate classroom discussion. Such digital tools are crucial for modernizing science education and preparing students for advanced studies in chemistry and related fields (Afolabi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of the periodic table in chemistry education, traditional teaching methods often fail to convey its complexity and interconnectedness effectively. Students in Government Science Schools in Gombe frequently report difficulties in understanding element groupings and periodic trends when relying solely on static diagrams and textual explanations (Ibrahim, 2023). This limited engagement can lead to poor retention of critical information and hinder students’ overall performance in chemistry. Although animated infographics have the potential to transform the learning experience by providing dynamic, interactive visualizations, their use in the local educational context remains minimal due to technological limitations, high production costs, and a lack of tailored content. Additionally, teachers often struggle with integrating digital tools into their lesson plans, which further reduces the potential benefits of animated educational materials (Chinwe, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by developing and evaluating animated infographics specifically designed to enhance understanding of the periodic table. It will assess the impact on student engagement, comprehension, and retention of chemical concepts. The research will also identify the challenges faced by educators in adopting digital visual aids and propose strategies to optimize their integration into the curriculum, ensuring a more interactive and effective learning environment (Afolabi, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
• To design and implement animated infographics for the periodic table.
• To evaluate their impact on student engagement and understanding.
• To identify challenges and propose solutions for integration into the curriculum.
Research Questions
• How do animated infographics enhance the learning of the periodic table?
• What improvements in comprehension and retention are observed?
• What challenges hinder effective integration, and how can they be addressed?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it demonstrates the potential of animated infographics to revolutionize chemistry education by making complex concepts accessible and engaging (Ibrahim, 2023). The findings will provide educators and policymakers in Gombe with valuable insights into integrating digital visual tools, thereby improving student performance in science subjects (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the development and evaluation of animated infographics for teaching the periodic table in Government Science Schools in Gombe, Gombe State. It focuses exclusively on digital visual tools in chemistry education.
