Background of the study
Practical science education is essential for understanding scientific principles, yet rural secondary schools in Sokoto, Sokoto State, often lack the infrastructure to support well-equipped laboratories. A virtual science laboratory can bridge this gap by providing interactive, simulated experiments that enable students to conduct scientific investigations in a risk-free, cost-effective environment (Adeola, 2023). Using computer simulations, virtual labs replicate real-world experiments, allowing students to manipulate variables, observe outcomes, and learn through trial and error. This technology is particularly beneficial for rural schools where access to physical lab equipment is limited. Virtual labs also support self-paced learning and can be updated with the latest scientific data, ensuring that students are exposed to current research and methodologies (Ibrahim, 2024). However, challenges such as high initial development costs, the need for reliable digital infrastructure, and potential technical difficulties in maintaining virtual lab software remain. This study aims to design and implement a virtual science laboratory tailored for rural secondary schools in Sokoto, evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing science education, and propose strategies to overcome the technical and operational barriers to its adoption (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Rural secondary schools in Sokoto face significant challenges in delivering quality science education due to the lack of adequate laboratory facilities. Traditional hands-on experiments are often impractical because of limited resources and safety concerns. Although virtual science laboratories offer a promising alternative by simulating experimental procedures digitally, their adoption is hindered by issues such as high development and maintenance costs, inconsistent internet connectivity, and limited digital literacy among educators and students. These obstacles lead to a scenario where students do not fully benefit from the practical aspects of science education, resulting in lower engagement and suboptimal understanding of scientific concepts. This study seeks to evaluate the feasibility and educational impact of a virtual science laboratory in rural settings, identify the primary technical and infrastructural challenges, and propose solutions to ensure sustainable and effective integration of virtual labs into the science curriculum (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a virtual science laboratory tailored for rural secondary schools.

  2. To evaluate its impact on student learning and engagement in science.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for sustainable implementation.

Research questions

  1. How does a virtual science laboratory improve practical science learning?

  2. What technical and infrastructural barriers hinder its effective use?

  3. How can these challenges be overcome to optimize virtual lab performance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a solution for improving science education in resource-constrained rural areas. The findings will inform policy decisions and educational practices, potentially enhancing science learning outcomes and promoting innovation in rural schools (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the design and evaluation of a virtual science laboratory in rural secondary schools in Sokoto. Limitations include network reliability and variability in digital literacy.

Definitions of terms

  • Virtual Science Laboratory: A digital simulation that replicates real-world scientific experiments.

  • Science Education: The process of teaching and learning scientific principles.

  • Simulation: The imitation of a real-world process in a controlled digital environment.
