Background of the study
Digital comics have emerged as a popular medium for storytelling and education, blending visual art with narrative text to create engaging learning experiences. In Kaduna, Kaduna State, secondary school literature curricula often rely on traditional textbooks, which may not fully capture the interest of modern students. Digital comics offer an innovative approach by presenting literary works in an interactive and visually appealing format that can enhance comprehension and foster critical thinking (Adeola, 2023). By leveraging colorful illustrations, dynamic layouts, and multimedia enhancements such as sound and animation, digital comics can transform classical literature and contemporary texts into accessible and engaging content. This method can support diverse learning styles and encourage reluctant readers by making literature more relatable and enjoyable. Additionally, digital comics provide a platform for creative expression, allowing students to produce their own comic strips and narratives, thereby deepening their understanding of literary concepts and cultural themes (Ibrahim, 2024). However, challenges such as limited access to digital devices, high production costs, and the need for teacher training in digital media integration may impede their widespread adoption. This study aims to analyze the impact of digital comics on literature education in secondary schools in Kaduna, examining their effectiveness in enhancing student engagement, comprehension, and creativity, and proposing strategies to overcome implementation challenges (Chinaza, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Traditional literature teaching methods in secondary schools in Kaduna often rely on static texts and conventional lectures that may fail to engage students in the digital era. As a result, students may struggle to connect with and fully appreciate literary works, leading to poor comprehension and disinterest in literature. Digital comics, with their blend of visual and textual storytelling, have the potential to revitalize literature education by offering an interactive and immersive experience. However, their adoption is hampered by factors such as high development costs, limited technological infrastructure in schools, and insufficient training for educators in digital storytelling techniques. These challenges result in an underutilization of digital comics as a teaching tool, thereby limiting the potential benefits of enhanced engagement and improved learning outcomes. This study seeks to investigate these challenges, evaluate the effectiveness of digital comics in enhancing literary comprehension, and recommend strategies to facilitate the integration of digital comics into secondary school literature curricula in Kaduna (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).
