Background of the study
Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage encompasses a diverse array of historical artifacts, traditional art, and indigenous narratives. However, preserving and disseminating this heritage poses significant challenges, particularly in the face of rapid modernization and urbanization. At Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, the concept of a virtual museum offers a novel solution for cultural preservation and education. A virtual museum leverages digital technologies—including interactive multimedia, 3D modeling, and virtual reality—to create an immersive platform where users can explore cultural artifacts and historical narratives online (Adeola, 2023). This approach not only safeguards cultural heritage by digitizing rare and fragile items but also makes it accessible to a broader audience, including students, researchers, and the global community. Virtual museums can provide detailed contextual information through audio-visual presentations, interactive timelines, and virtual tours, thereby enriching the visitor’s understanding and appreciation of Nigerian culture (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite its potential, challenges such as high development costs, the need for advanced technical infrastructure, and issues of digital curation and authenticity remain. This study aims to design and implement a virtual museum at Ahmadu Bello University that preserves Nigerian cultural heritage while serving as an educational tool, and to evaluate its effectiveness in engaging users and promoting cultural awareness (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
The preservation of Nigerian cultural heritage faces numerous challenges, including the deterioration of physical artifacts, limited public access to cultural resources, and inadequate funding for traditional museums. Although digital preservation via a virtual museum offers a promising alternative, its implementation at Ahmadu Bello University is impeded by factors such as high production and maintenance costs, technical complexities in digitizing and curating cultural content, and concerns about authenticity and intellectual property. Additionally, there is a lack of standardized methodologies for creating interactive digital exhibits that faithfully represent cultural artifacts and narratives. These challenges result in limited public engagement and reduced educational value in current cultural preservation efforts. This study seeks to evaluate the feasibility and impact of a virtual museum designed to preserve Nigerian cultural heritage, identify key technical and operational challenges, and propose strategies to optimize its development and ensure its sustainability (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a virtual museum for preserving Nigerian cultural heritage.

  2. To evaluate its impact on cultural education and user engagement.

  3. To identify and address technical challenges in virtual museum implementation.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the virtual museum in preserving and presenting Nigerian cultural heritage?

  2. What technical challenges affect its development and user experience?

  3. How can the system be optimized to ensure authenticity and sustainability?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a digital framework for preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and enhancing cultural education. The findings will inform institutions and policymakers on innovative approaches to cultural preservation and digital museum design (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the design and implementation of a virtual museum at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Limitations include high development costs and challenges in digital content curation.

Definitions of terms
