Background of the study
Agricultural extension services play a crucial role in transferring modern agricultural knowledge and technology to farmers. In regions such as Sokoto State, where agriculture is a primary economic activity, the effectiveness of extension services can greatly influence productivity and sustainability. Usmanu Danfodiyo University has increasingly incorporated multimedia tools—such as video tutorials, interactive presentations, and digital resource libraries—to enhance the delivery of agricultural information. Multimedia systems enable extension agents to present complex agronomic practices and innovations through engaging, dynamic content that improves farmers’ comprehension and retention of information (Adeola, 2023). These tools also facilitate remote learning, which is particularly beneficial in rural areas where access to traditional extension services may be limited. Furthermore, multimedia resources can be updated quickly to reflect the latest research findings, ensuring that farmers receive current, evidence-based advice (Ibrahim, 2024). However, the integration of multimedia into extension services is not without challenges. Issues such as high production costs, varying levels of digital literacy among extension workers and farmers, and infrastructural limitations (e.g., inconsistent power supply and internet connectivity) can affect the overall impact of these tools. This study examines how multimedia is currently used at Usmanu Danfodiyo University to enhance agricultural extension, assesses its effectiveness in improving farmer outreach and knowledge transfer, and explores strategies to overcome technical and operational barriers (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite significant investments in multimedia-based extension services, many agricultural communities in Sokoto still experience low uptake of modern farming practices. Traditional extension methods, while familiar, have proven insufficient in addressing the rapidly changing agricultural landscape. Multimedia tools have the potential to bridge this gap by delivering visually rich, interactive content; yet, their effectiveness is limited by factors such as high installation and maintenance costs, inadequate training for extension officers, and poor infrastructure in remote farming communities. Inadequate digital literacy among some farmers further impedes effective communication, leading to a disconnect between the technology provided and the practical needs on the ground. This study seeks to evaluate the real impact of multimedia on agricultural extension, identify key challenges in its implementation, and propose sustainable solutions to ensure that multimedia investments translate into measurable improvements in agricultural productivity (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of multimedia tools in improving agricultural extension outcomes.

  2. To identify technical and operational challenges affecting multimedia deployment.

  3. To propose strategies for sustainable and inclusive multimedia integration.

Research questions

  1. How does multimedia enhance the delivery of agricultural extension services?

  2. What technical and infrastructural challenges limit its effectiveness?

  3. How can training and resource allocation be optimized to improve multimedia adoption?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides empirical insights into the role of multimedia in agricultural extension, informing policymakers and educators on how to enhance technology transfer to rural farmers. Improved multimedia strategies can lead to higher crop yields, better resource management, and ultimately, improved livelihoods (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to evaluating multimedia applications in agricultural extension services at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Limitations include cost constraints, variable digital literacy among users, and infrastructural challenges in rural areas.

Definitions of terms

  • Multimedia: The integration of text, images, audio, and video to convey information.

  • Agricultural Extension Services: Programs designed to transfer knowledge and technology to farmers.

  • Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms.
