Background of the study
Interactive whiteboards have revolutionized classroom instruction by providing dynamic, visual, and interactive learning experiences. At Taraba State University, Jalingo, traditional methods of teaching biology often rely on static diagrams and lectures that may not fully engage students or effectively convey complex biological processes. Interactive whiteboards offer an advanced platform where educators can integrate multimedia content—such as animations, videos, and interactive diagrams—into biology lessons (Adeola, 2023). This technology enables real-time interaction, allowing teachers to annotate and manipulate digital content during lectures, thereby fostering active learning and deeper understanding. By enabling collaborative activities and immediate feedback, interactive whiteboards promote an engaging educational environment that can accommodate diverse learning styles. Furthermore, the integration of real-time simulations and virtual dissections allows students to explore biological systems in detail, improving both their retention and application of knowledge (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite these advantages, the implementation of interactive whiteboards faces challenges including high acquisition costs, technical maintenance issues, and the need for teacher training to maximize their potential. This study aims to investigate the use of interactive whiteboards in biology teaching at Taraba State University, examining their impact on student engagement and learning outcomes, and identifying strategies to overcome implementation challenges (Chinaza, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Traditional biology instruction at Taraba State University relies on static teaching methods that limit student interaction and the effective communication of complex biological concepts. The absence of interactive digital tools contributes to low student engagement, poor conceptual understanding, and a lack of practical application. Although interactive whiteboards have the potential to transform biology education by integrating multimedia resources and facilitating dynamic teaching methods, their adoption is constrained by several factors. High initial costs, insufficient technical support, and a lack of comprehensive teacher training hinder the effective use of interactive whiteboards. Moreover, technical issues such as system downtime and compatibility with existing curricular content further compromise their utility. These challenges result in missed opportunities for enhancing student learning through interactive and visual means. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive whiteboards in biology classes, identify the barriers to their successful implementation, and propose actionable strategies to optimize their integration into the curriculum. By addressing these issues, the research aims to create a more engaging, interactive, and effective learning environment that improves student outcomes in biology (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeola, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the impact of interactive whiteboards on student engagement in biology.

  • To identify technical and operational challenges in using interactive whiteboards.

  • To propose strategies for optimizing their use in biology education.

Research questions

  • How do interactive whiteboards enhance the teaching of biology?

  • What are the main technical and operational challenges in their implementation?

  • How can teacher training and system integration be improved?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores how interactive whiteboards can transform biology education by fostering an interactive and visually engaging learning environment. The findings will aid educators and administrators in overcoming technical barriers and enhancing instructional methods, ultimately improving academic outcomes (Adeola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the use of interactive whiteboards in biology teaching at Taraba State University, Jalingo. Limitations include high costs, technical maintenance, and teacher training variability.

Definitions of terms

  • Interactive Whiteboard: A digital display that allows for real-time interaction and multimedia integration.

  • Biology Education: The teaching and learning of biological concepts and processes.

  • Active Learning: An instructional approach that engages students directly in the learning process.
