Background of the study
The teaching and learning of mathematics in government secondary schools in Maiduguri, Borno State, have traditionally relied on conventional methods that often fail to engage students or cater to diverse learning styles. The implementation of interactive multimedia systems represents a promising strategy to transform mathematics education by integrating audio, video, animations, and interactive simulations into the curriculum (Chinaza, 2023; Adeola, 2023). These systems provide dynamic visualizations of mathematical concepts, enabling students to explore problems in an interactive environment and develop a deeper understanding of abstract ideas. Through real-time feedback and adaptive learning modules, multimedia systems can tailor instruction to individual student needs, thereby promoting personalized learning. Additionally, such systems facilitate collaborative learning and peer-to-peer interactions, further enhancing the educational experience. The use of multimedia in mathematics not only makes learning more engaging but also improves retention and problem-solving skills. However, despite these advantages, the adoption of interactive multimedia systems in government secondary schools faces challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure, limited teacher training, and high implementation costs. This study aims to implement and evaluate an interactive multimedia system specifically designed for mathematics instruction in Maiduguri, examining its impact on student performance and engagement while addressing the technical and operational challenges inherent in its deployment (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Mathematics education in government secondary schools in Maiduguri is often characterized by low student engagement, poor comprehension of abstract concepts, and suboptimal academic performance. Traditional teaching methods, which rely heavily on textbook instruction and static blackboard explanations, do not adequately address the diverse learning needs of students. This leads to a lack of interest in mathematics and poor problem-solving abilities. Although interactive multimedia systems have the potential to revolutionize mathematics instruction by offering dynamic, engaging, and personalized learning experiences, their implementation in Maiduguri faces significant challenges. Limited access to digital infrastructure, insufficient teacher training in multimedia technologies, and budgetary constraints have hindered the integration of such innovative tools into the curriculum. Additionally, there are concerns about the sustainability of these systems and their adaptability to local educational contexts. The absence of a robust, interactive multimedia framework leaves students without access to modern educational tools that can stimulate critical thinking and enhance understanding. This study seeks to investigate the operational challenges and educational impacts of implementing an interactive multimedia system for mathematics learning in government secondary schools. By identifying technical, financial, and pedagogical barriers, the research aims to develop strategies that will facilitate the effective integration of multimedia technologies, ultimately improving student engagement and academic outcomes in mathematics (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To implement an interactive multimedia system for mathematics instruction.

  2. To evaluate its impact on student engagement and academic performance.

  3. To identify challenges and recommend strategies for system sustainability and teacher training.

Research questions

  1. How does an interactive multimedia system improve the understanding of mathematical concepts?

  2. What technical and operational challenges affect its implementation in secondary schools?

  3. How can teacher training be enhanced to support multimedia-based instruction?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the role of interactive multimedia systems in transforming mathematics education in government secondary schools in Maiduguri. The findings will provide practical insights for educators and policymakers to enhance student engagement and performance through innovative, technology-driven instructional strategies, thereby contributing to overall academic improvement (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the implementation of an interactive multimedia system for mathematics in government secondary schools in Maiduguri. Limitations include digital infrastructure constraints, teacher training gaps, and high initial costs.
