Background of the study
Efficient water management is crucial for sustainable campus operations, particularly in urban universities where water scarcity and wastage can significantly impact budgets and resource sustainability. In Kano Municipal LGA, traditional water monitoring systems are often outdated and unable to provide real-time data on consumption patterns. IoT-based smart water consumption monitoring systems integrate advanced sensors, wireless communication, and cloud analytics to provide continuous oversight of water usage in university campuses (Chinaza, 2023). These systems measure parameters such as flow rate, pressure, and volume, and transmit data in real time to central management platforms. This real-time data collection enables immediate detection of leaks, abnormal consumption, and inefficiencies, thereby facilitating prompt maintenance and conservation measures (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the use of predictive analytics allows university administrators to forecast water demand, optimize resource allocation, and implement sustainable water-saving initiatives. The data-driven insights generated by these systems can be instrumental in designing long-term water management strategies that not only reduce costs but also contribute to environmental conservation.

The integration of IoT technology in water monitoring aligns with global trends towards smart campus initiatives, where sustainability is prioritized. In Kano Municipal LGA, such systems can provide a comprehensive view of water usage across different departments, identify wastage hotspots, and support the implementation of automated control systems to regulate water flow. Despite these potential benefits, challenges such as high initial setup costs, integration with existing infrastructure, and ensuring data security remain significant obstacles. Additionally, the reliability of sensors in detecting minute variations in water flow under varying pressure conditions is crucial for system accuracy. This study aims to optimize IoT-based water consumption monitoring by evaluating system performance, addressing integration challenges, and proposing cost-effective solutions that ensure accurate and real-time water management on university campuses (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
University campuses in Kano Municipal LGA often suffer from inefficient water management due to outdated monitoring systems that rely on manual inspections and periodic meter readings. This approach leads to delays in leak detection, water wastage, and higher operational costs. Traditional systems do not provide real-time insights into water consumption, resulting in reactive rather than proactive maintenance measures. Although IoT-based water consumption monitoring systems promise to deliver real-time data and predictive analytics, their adoption is hindered by factors such as high capital expenditure, difficulties in integrating with legacy infrastructures, and concerns over data security and reliability (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the lack of continuous monitoring makes it challenging to pinpoint specific areas of inefficiency, leading to suboptimal resource allocation. These challenges underscore the need for a robust, real-time monitoring system that can not only detect anomalies immediately but also provide actionable insights to improve water conservation efforts. The absence of such a system prevents university administrators from effectively managing water resources, thereby contributing to unnecessary wastage and increased maintenance costs. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the technical, operational, and financial challenges of implementing an IoT-based water consumption monitoring system. By identifying these barriers and proposing optimization strategies, the research aims to develop a framework that enhances system performance and sustainability, ultimately leading to more efficient water management on university campuses in Kano Municipal LGA (Chinaza, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the performance of IoT-based water monitoring systems in real-time data collection.

  2. To identify integration and technical challenges in existing campus infrastructures.

  3. To propose strategies for optimizing water consumption monitoring and reducing wastage.
