Background of the study
Educational inclusivity remains a pivotal challenge in many regions, particularly for students with disabilities. In Sokoto North LGA, traditional classroom settings often fail to address the diverse learning needs of these students, resulting in suboptimal academic outcomes. IoT-based smart personalized learning tools represent a groundbreaking approach that leverages real-time data, adaptive algorithms, and interconnected devices to tailor educational content to individual learners. These tools can provide multimodal instructional support—ranging from audio-visual aids to interactive feedback mechanisms—that adjust dynamically to a student’s pace and learning style (Chinaza, 2023). By integrating sensors and wearable devices, the system collects data on student engagement, comprehension, and physiological responses, thereby enabling educators to identify areas where students require additional support. Such personalized interventions not only enhance the learning experience but also foster greater autonomy among students with disabilities (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, these systems can bridge the gap between mainstream education and special education needs by offering customized learning pathways that promote inclusion and equity. The application of IoT in education is consistent with global trends toward digital transformation in classrooms, where data-driven insights support more effective teaching methodologies. However, despite the promising potential, several challenges—such as high implementation costs, limited digital literacy among educators, and data privacy concerns—must be addressed to facilitate widespread adoption. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of IoT-based personalized learning tools in improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities in Sokoto North LGA. It will examine how adaptive learning technologies can be integrated into existing educational frameworks to enhance student engagement and performance while overcoming operational and technical barriers (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Students with disabilities in Sokoto North LGA face significant challenges due to the lack of tailored educational resources that address their unique learning needs. Traditional educational tools often adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, which fails to provide the personalized support required for effective learning. The absence of adaptive learning systems leads to disengagement, slower academic progress, and a sense of exclusion among these students. While IoT-based smart personalized learning tools offer the potential to transform the educational landscape by delivering customized content in real time, their adoption is limited by several barriers. High implementation costs, insufficient technical support, and concerns regarding data privacy hinder the integration of these technologies into the existing education system. Additionally, the lack of training and awareness among educators regarding the use of advanced digital tools further exacerbates the problem. As a result, students with disabilities continue to be disadvantaged in their academic pursuits, leading to broader social and economic implications. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the operational, technical, and pedagogical challenges associated with implementing IoT-based personalized learning systems in inclusive education settings. The research aims to identify key factors that affect system efficacy and propose actionable recommendations to enhance digital accessibility and educational equity for students with disabilities in Sokoto North LGA (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of IoT-based personalized learning tools for students with disabilities.

  2. To identify technical and operational challenges in system deployment.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating adaptive learning tools into mainstream education.

Research questions

  1. How do IoT-based personalized learning tools enhance educational outcomes for students with disabilities?

  2. What technical challenges impede the implementation of these tools?

  3. How can educator training and system integration be improved?

Significance of the study
This study is crucial for promoting educational inclusivity by exploring how IoT-based personalized learning tools can be tailored to support students with disabilities. The findings will inform educators, policymakers, and technology developers on best practices for integrating adaptive learning systems into inclusive classrooms, ultimately enhancing academic performance and social inclusion (Chinaza, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to IoT-based personalized learning tools for students with disabilities in Sokoto North LGA. Limitations include high implementation costs and variable digital literacy among educators.

Definitions of terms

  • IoT (Internet of Things): A network of connected devices that automatically exchange data.

  • Personalized Learning Tools: Digital systems that adapt educational content to individual learning needs.

  • Inclusive Education: An educational approach that accommodates diverse learning requirements.
