Background of the study
University campuses in Makurdi LGA are dynamic environments characterized by high pedestrian traffic, vehicular movements, and a diverse population of students and staff. With the increasing complexity of campus mobility and safety demands, traditional safety measures have proven insufficient to mitigate risks. The advent of IoT-based smart road safety alert systems offers an innovative approach to enhancing safety on campus by providing instantaneous alerts regarding potential hazards. These systems incorporate a network of sensors, cameras, and communication modules that monitor road conditions, pedestrian crossings, and vehicular speeds, thereby enabling real-time response to accidents or risky behaviors (Okafor, 2023). The integration of IoT technology in this context facilitates prompt intervention by campus security and local law enforcement agencies, ultimately reducing the likelihood of accidents and improving overall campus safety (Eze, 2024).

Recent studies have underscored the benefits of implementing such systems in high-density areas. By employing predictive analytics and real-time data processing, IoT-based road safety solutions can identify patterns of risky behavior and issue alerts to both drivers and pedestrians. This not only enhances individual safety but also contributes to a culture of proactive risk management within the campus community (Okafor, 2023). Furthermore, the use of these systems in academic environments aligns with global trends toward smart campuses, where technology is leveraged to improve quality of life and operational efficiency. However, challenges remain in terms of system integration, data privacy, and the training of personnel to manage and interpret the data effectively (Eze, 2024). Additionally, financial constraints and the need for robust infrastructure can limit the full-scale deployment of IoT devices across sprawling campus areas. This study will explore the feasibility, challenges, and potential benefits of implementing IoT-based smart road safety alert systems on university campuses in Makurdi LGA, with a particular focus on system performance, user engagement, and safety outcomes (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
University campuses in Makurdi LGA face significant safety challenges due to high pedestrian and vehicular interactions, often resulting in accidents and near-miss incidents. Traditional road safety measures, which rely on periodic manual surveillance and static signage, have proven inadequate in providing timely alerts and preventing accidents. The absence of a dynamic, data-driven alert system contributes to delayed emergency responses and insufficient risk mitigation strategies (Eze, 2024). Although IoT-based smart road safety alert systems have demonstrated effectiveness in other high-density settings, their adoption in university campuses is impeded by infrastructural deficits, limited funding, and concerns over data privacy. Furthermore, the lack of integration between existing campus security protocols and advanced IoT solutions exacerbates the problem, leading to fragmented and inefficient responses to safety threats (Okafor, 2023). The failure to provide immediate alerts to students, staff, and visitors not only compromises safety but also undermines confidence in campus security measures. This study aims to investigate the core challenges that hinder the implementation of these systems on university campuses in Makurdi LGA. By identifying the gaps between the existing safety measures and the potential offered by IoT technology, the research intends to propose practical strategies for system integration, training, and policy development. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to the establishment of a more responsive and proactive road safety environment on university campuses, ensuring that technological advancements translate into tangible safety improvements (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of IoT-based road safety alert systems on university campuses.

  2. To identify infrastructural and operational challenges in implementing these systems.

  3. To recommend integration strategies for enhanced campus safety.

Research questions

  1. How effective are IoT-based safety alert systems in reducing campus road accidents?

  2. What are the primary challenges in integrating these systems with existing campus security measures?

  3. How can data privacy and system reliability be ensured during implementation?

Significance of the study
This study will provide a comprehensive analysis of IoT-based road safety systems on university campuses, offering insights into their effectiveness and challenges. The findings will inform campus security strategies and contribute to safer academic environments by guiding policy revisions and technological upgrades. The research benefits stakeholders by highlighting actionable improvements and promoting proactive risk management (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to university campuses in Makurdi LGA and focuses exclusively on IoT-based smart road safety alert systems. Limitations include data access restrictions and budgetary constraints.
