Background of the Study

Regular physical exercise is a proven method for reducing the risk of heart disease. In Sokoto State, where rapid lifestyle changes have led to increased sedentary behavior, exercise remains a critical intervention for improving cardiovascular health. Studies show that consistent physical activity helps control blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and enhances overall heart function (Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2024). Despite these benefits, many individuals in Sokoto State do not engage in regular exercise due to factors such as lack of recreational facilities, cultural attitudes towards physical activity, and time constraints. Public health initiatives promoting exercise have been implemented; however, their effectiveness is often limited by socioeconomic and environmental barriers. This study aims to evaluate the role of exercise in reducing heart disease risk in Sokoto State, exploring how physical activity levels correlate with cardiovascular outcomes and identifying obstacles that prevent regular exercise. The findings could inform targeted interventions designed to promote more active lifestyles, thereby reducing the incidence of heart disease in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Heart disease remains a significant public health issue in Sokoto State, and a lack of regular physical activity is a key contributing factor. Despite widespread knowledge about the benefits of exercise, many residents lead sedentary lifestyles, partly due to inadequate infrastructure, cultural norms, and economic challenges that limit leisure time. The absence of accessible recreational facilities and safe environments for physical activity further discourages exercise participation. Consequently, the risk of heart disease continues to rise, placing a heavy burden on the healthcare system. Current public health campaigns promoting exercise have not sufficiently addressed these barriers, resulting in persistently low levels of physical activity among high-risk populations. Without effective strategies to promote regular exercise, efforts to reduce heart disease risk will remain limited, exacerbating morbidity and mortality rates in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current levels of physical activity among residents of Sokoto State.

2. To examine the relationship between exercise frequency and cardiovascular risk factors.

3. To recommend interventions that promote regular physical activity for heart disease prevention.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of exercise participation among residents in Sokoto State?

2. How does regular physical activity influence cardiovascular risk factors?

3. What strategies can effectively encourage exercise and reduce heart disease risk?

Research Hypotheses

1. Low levels of physical activity are significantly associated with higher cardiovascular risk.

2. Regular exercise is inversely related to the prevalence of heart disease.

3. Community-based exercise programs will significantly improve heart health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study targets adult residents in both urban and rural areas of Sokoto State. Data will be collected through surveys, physical fitness assessments, and interviews. Limitations include self-report bias and potential seasonal variations in exercise behavior.

Definitions of Terms

• Exercise: Physical activity undertaken to improve health and fitness.

• Cardiovascular Risk Factors: Conditions or behaviors that increase the likelihood of heart disease.

• Sedentary Lifestyle: A way of life characterized by minimal physical activity.

• Community-Based Programs: Interventions delivered at the local level to promote health.
