Background of the Study

Lifestyle modifications, including changes in diet, physical activity, and stress management, are widely recognized as effective strategies for preventing heart disease. In Taraba State, traditional lifestyles are increasingly shifting due to urban influences, resulting in higher incidences of sedentary behavior, unhealthy diets, and other modifiable risk factors. Research shows that adopting healthy lifestyle practices can significantly reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and other cardiovascular conditions (Akinola, 2023; Musa, 2024). In Taraba State, while some communities continue to adhere to traditional diets and active lifestyles, many others have adopted modern habits that increase heart disease risk. Public health campaigns aimed at promoting lifestyle modifications have yielded mixed results, underscoring the need for tailored interventions that consider local cultural and socioeconomic factors. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of lifestyle modifications in preventing heart disease in Taraba State, examining the impact of factors such as physical activity, dietary patterns, and stress reduction on cardiovascular health. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations to improve heart disease prevention programs in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite widespread knowledge of the benefits of healthy lifestyles, the incidence of heart disease in Taraba State remains high. Many residents have adopted sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits as a result of rapid social and economic changes. The lack of structured programs that promote regular exercise, balanced diets, and stress management has contributed to the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, limited access to health education and preventive services exacerbates the problem, particularly in rural areas. Although lifestyle modification is recognized as a key preventive measure, current public health efforts in Taraba State have not adequately addressed the specific cultural and environmental barriers that prevent effective behavior change. This gap between knowledge and practice leads to continued high rates of heart disease, placing a significant burden on the healthcare system. A thorough investigation into lifestyle modifications and their impact on heart disease prevention is essential for developing targeted, culturally appropriate interventions that can reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular conditions in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate current lifestyle practices related to heart disease prevention in Taraba State.

2. To assess the impact of dietary habits, physical activity, and stress management on cardiovascular health.

3. To recommend culturally tailored lifestyle modification interventions.

Research Questions

1. What lifestyle factors are most associated with heart disease risk in Taraba State?

2. How do dietary habits, exercise, and stress management influence cardiovascular health in the region?

3. What interventions can effectively promote lifestyle modifications to reduce heart disease risk?

Research Hypotheses

1. Sedentary behavior is significantly associated with increased heart disease risk in Taraba State.

2. A diet high in saturated fats correlates with higher incidences of cardiovascular conditions.

3. Community-based lifestyle interventions will significantly reduce heart disease risk.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adults in selected urban and rural areas of Taraba State. Data will be collected via surveys, health assessments, and interviews. Limitations include potential self-report bias and variability in lifestyle practices.

Definitions of Terms

• Lifestyle Modifications: Changes in daily habits related to diet, physical activity, and stress management.

• Heart Disease: Disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease.

• Preventive Measures: Strategies designed to reduce the risk of disease.

• Sedentary Behavior: A lifestyle characterized by low physical activity.
