Background of the Study

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a crucial determinant of health outcomes, influencing access to information, healthcare services, and overall disease awareness. In Kogi State, disparities in income, education, and living conditions significantly affect HIV awareness among the population (Adebola, 2023; Lawal, 2024). Individuals from higher socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to access reliable health information and engage with prevention programs, whereas those from lower SES groups often face barriers that limit their understanding of HIV transmission and prevention. Limited access to mass media, lower literacy levels, and reduced interaction with healthcare professionals exacerbate these disparities. Consequently, a substantial portion of the population remains uninformed about HIV risk factors, testing services, and treatment options.

The correlation between SES and HIV awareness has important implications for public health policy and intervention design. Tailoring HIV education programs to address the needs of low SES communities could lead to improved awareness and, ultimately, better health outcomes. In Kogi State, understanding the nuances of how socioeconomic factors shape HIV knowledge is essential for developing targeted strategies that bridge the information gap and promote equitable access to HIV prevention and care services.

Statement of the Problem

In Kogi State, low socioeconomic status is a significant barrier to adequate HIV awareness, contributing to higher vulnerability to HIV infection. Many individuals in low-income communities lack access to quality health information and are often excluded from mainstream HIV education campaigns. This disparity is reflected in lower rates of HIV testing and delayed diagnosis among economically disadvantaged groups (Chukwu, 2023). Furthermore, limited educational opportunities and poor health infrastructure exacerbate the situation, leading to widespread misconceptions and stigma surrounding HIV. The current public health initiatives in Kogi State have not sufficiently addressed these socioeconomic disparities, resulting in persistent gaps in HIV awareness that hinder effective prevention efforts. Without targeted interventions that consider SES-related barriers, efforts to reduce HIV transmission may continue to fall short, leaving high-risk populations inadequately protected.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of HIV awareness across different socioeconomic groups in Kogi State.

2. To identify the socioeconomic factors that influence HIV knowledge and awareness.

3. To propose strategies to enhance HIV awareness among low SES populations.

Research Questions

1. How does socioeconomic status affect HIV awareness in Kogi State?

2. What socioeconomic barriers limit access to HIV information?

3. What interventions can improve HIV awareness among low-income communities?

Research Hypotheses

1. Lower socioeconomic status is significantly associated with reduced HIV awareness.

2. Limited educational attainment contributes to lower levels of HIV knowledge.

3. Targeted interventions tailored to low SES populations will significantly improve HIV awareness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on diverse socioeconomic groups in Kogi State. Data will be collected using surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-report bias and challenges in reaching the most economically disadvantaged groups.

Definitions of Terms

• Socioeconomic Status (SES): An individual’s or group’s economic and social position based on income, education, and occupation.

• HIV Awareness: The level of knowledge about HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment.

• Health Disparities: Differences in health outcomes among different population groups.

• Public Health Interventions: Programs designed to improve health outcomes in a population.
