Background of the Study

University students represent a unique demographic that is particularly susceptible to lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity. In Benue State, changes in dietary habits, reduced physical activity, and increased stress levels associated with academic pressures have contributed to rising obesity rates among students (Ibrahim, 2023; Uche, 2024). The transition from adolescence to adulthood in a university setting often leads to significant changes in lifestyle, including irregular meal patterns, increased consumption of fast food, and limited time for exercise. These factors create a high-risk environment for the development of obesity, which can have long-term health implications, including an increased risk for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

Recent studies have indicated that obesity prevalence among university students is on the rise globally, and Benue State is no exception. The campus environment, with its easy access to calorie-dense foods and sedentary academic routines, plays a critical role in shaping students’ health behaviors. Moreover, limited awareness about healthy eating and exercise, coupled with the stress of academic life, exacerbates the situation. This study aims to assess the prevalence of obesity among university students in Benue State, identify contributing lifestyle factors, and provide recommendations for campus health promotion programs that could mitigate these risks.

Statement of the Problem

Obesity among university students in Benue State has become a growing public health concern. Despite numerous health promotion initiatives, there is limited data on the actual prevalence of obesity within this demographic. The university environment often promotes sedentary behaviors, unhealthy eating habits, and irregular sleep patterns, all of which contribute to weight gain (Okafor, 2023). Students frequently rely on fast food and snacks due to busy schedules and financial constraints, leading to poor nutritional choices. Additionally, the stress associated with academic performance further reduces the likelihood of engaging in regular physical activity. This convergence of factors not only compromises the immediate health of students but also predisposes them to chronic diseases in the future. Without targeted interventions and a better understanding of the specific factors driving obesity in this group, efforts to improve student health may remain ineffective.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the prevalence of obesity among university students in Benue State.

2. To identify lifestyle factors contributing to obesity in this population.

3. To recommend strategies for promoting healthy behaviors among university students.

Research Questions

1. What is the current prevalence of obesity among university students in Benue State?

2. Which lifestyle factors are most strongly associated with obesity in this group?

3. What interventions can effectively reduce obesity rates among university students?

Research Hypotheses

1. University students in Benue State have a high prevalence of obesity.

2. Poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles are significantly associated with increased obesity among students.

3. Campus-based health promotion programs will significantly reduce obesity rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on university students in selected institutions in Benue State. Data will be collected through anthropometric measurements, surveys, and interviews. Limitations include potential response bias and variability in student lifestyles across different institutions.

Definitions of Terms

• Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, often measured by body mass index (BMI).

• University Students: Individuals enrolled in higher education institutions.

• Sedentary Lifestyle: A lifestyle with minimal physical activity.

• Health Promotion Programs: Initiatives designed to improve health and encourage healthy behaviors.
