Background of the Study :
University students often experience high levels of stress and irregular health patterns due to academic pressures and lifestyle changes. In Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, access to continuous health monitoring is limited by insufficient healthcare facilities and resources. IoT-based remote health monitoring systems provide a modern solution by enabling continuous, real-time tracking of vital health parameters through wearable devices and sensors. This study proposes to investigate the implementation of an IoT-based remote health monitoring system specifically designed for university students. The system will employ wearable sensors to monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and physical activity, transmitting data to a centralized platform accessible by university health services (Ibrahim, 2023). The collected data will be analyzed using advanced algorithms to detect anomalies and provide early warnings of potential health issues. This proactive approach can facilitate timely medical interventions and promote a healthier lifestyle among students. Previous research indicates that remote health monitoring can improve health outcomes and reduce the burden on campus health facilities (Olu, 2024). The proposed system will also incorporate a user-friendly mobile application that allows students to view their health data, receive personalized recommendations, and communicate with healthcare providers. The integration of cloud computing ensures scalability and efficient data processing. This study aims to assess the feasibility, effectiveness, and user acceptance of the IoT-based health monitoring system in the university setting, ultimately contributing to improved student health and well-being (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
University students in Dutse LGA face challenges related to irregular health monitoring, which can lead to delayed detection of health issues and increased stress levels. Traditional campus health services are often reactive rather than proactive, relying on periodic check-ups that may not capture sudden changes in health status. This lack of continuous monitoring means that critical health indicators may go unnoticed until they escalate into serious conditions. Additionally, limited access to healthcare professionals on campus exacerbates these issues, leaving students vulnerable to the adverse effects of stress and unhealthy lifestyles. The absence of a real-time health monitoring system hinders early intervention and personalized healthcare management, resulting in preventable health complications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an IoT-based remote health monitoring system that can continuously track vital parameters and alert both students and healthcare providers to potential issues. Such a system would empower students to take charge of their health and allow campus health services to provide timely, data-driven care. This study seeks to develop and evaluate a comprehensive IoT-based solution tailored to the unique needs of university students, addressing challenges related to data privacy, system integration, and user engagement. By doing so, it aims to improve overall health outcomes and reduce the strain on limited campus health resources (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To develop an IoT-based remote health monitoring system for university students.

  • To integrate wearable sensors and mobile applications for real-time health tracking.

  • To evaluate the system’s impact on early detection of health issues and user satisfaction.

Research Questions:

  • How effective is the IoT-based system in continuously monitoring student health parameters?

  • What are the improvements in early health issue detection compared to traditional methods?

  • How does the system influence student engagement and overall well-being?

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it explores the potential of IoT-based remote health monitoring to improve the health outcomes of university students. By providing continuous, real-time health data, the system enables proactive medical interventions and promotes healthier lifestyles. The research offers a scalable model for enhancing campus healthcare services in resource-limited settings, ultimately contributing to improved student well-being and reduced healthcare costs (Adeniyi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of the remote health monitoring system in a university setting in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, and does not extend to broader community health services.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Remote Health Monitoring: Continuous tracking of health parameters using IoT-enabled devices.

  2. Wearable Sensors: Devices worn on the body that collect physiological data.

  3. Real-Time Data: Immediate data processing and transmission as events occur.
