Background of the Study
Mental health awareness programs are crucial in changing public perceptions and reducing the stigma associated with mental illnesses. In Benue State, Nigeria, widespread stigma has historically prevented many individuals from seeking help for mental health issues. Public awareness initiatives, including media campaigns, community outreach, and school-based programs, have been implemented to educate the public about mental health, debunk myths, and promote acceptance of those affected (Uche, 2023). These programs aim to shift societal attitudes by providing accurate information and highlighting the importance of mental health care. Studies have shown that reducing stigma not only increases treatment-seeking behavior but also improves overall community well-being. However, despite these efforts, stigma remains a significant barrier, often reinforced by cultural beliefs and lack of understanding. Evaluating the effectiveness of mental health awareness programs in Benue State is essential to determine their impact on reducing stigma and to inform strategies that can further promote mental health acceptance (Aminu, 2024). This study will assess the reach, impact, and challenges of current mental health awareness initiatives, with the goal of developing improved approaches to stigma reduction (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Benue State, despite ongoing mental health awareness campaigns, stigma surrounding mental illness continues to impede access to care. Many individuals remain reluctant to seek help due to fear of discrimination and social exclusion. The persistence of stigma undermines the efforts of mental health professionals and public health agencies, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. Furthermore, the limited evaluation of awareness programs means that their effectiveness in changing public attitudes is not well understood. Without clear evidence on what works, it is challenging to scale up interventions and secure necessary funding. This gap in knowledge hampers efforts to create a supportive environment that encourages individuals to access mental health services (Chukwuma, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of mental health awareness programs in reducing stigma in Benue State.
  2. To identify factors that hinder or promote the reduction of stigma.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing mental health awareness and reducing stigma.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are current mental health awareness programs in reducing stigma in Benue State?
  2. What are the key factors that influence stigma related to mental health?
  3. What interventions can further improve the reduction of stigma in the community?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Comprehensive mental health awareness programs are significantly associated with reduced stigma.
  2. Cultural beliefs and misinformation contribute to persistent stigma in Benue State.
  3. Enhanced community engagement and targeted messaging will further decrease mental health stigma.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on urban and rural areas in Benue State. Data will be collected via surveys, focus groups, and interviews with community members and mental health professionals. Limitations include potential self-report bias and regional differences in program delivery.
