Background of the Study
Work-life balance is a critical aspect of overall well-being, particularly among older professionals who may experience prolonged stress from long careers and demanding work environments. In Enugu State, older professionals often struggle to balance the demands of work with personal life, leading to increased stress and adverse health outcomes. Chronic work-related stress has been linked to a range of health issues, including hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health disorders (Okoro, 2023). As professionals age, the cumulative effects of stress can exacerbate age-related health declines, impacting both physical and psychological well-being.
In Enugu State, changes in the labor market and evolving work practices have heightened the challenges associated with maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Many older professionals continue to work past retirement age due to financial pressures or personal ambitions, resulting in prolonged exposure to stressors. Although some organizations have introduced policies aimed at improving work-life balance, these initiatives are often not tailored to the unique needs of older employees. Moreover, cultural expectations and societal norms may discourage older professionals from prioritizing personal well-being over work commitments. This study seeks to investigate how work-life balance influences stress levels and overall health outcomes among older professionals in Enugu State, providing insights that can inform organizational policies and personal health management strategies (Adeniyi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing awareness of the importance of work-life balance, many older professionals in Enugu State continue to experience high levels of work-related stress, which adversely affects their health. The pressure to remain productive and engaged in competitive work environments often results in extended working hours and insufficient time for rest, family, and recreational activities. This imbalance contributes to chronic stress, which is associated with a range of negative health outcomes including cardiovascular issues, mental health disorders, and reduced immune function. Additionally, the lack of organizational support and flexible work policies tailored to older employees further compounds the problem. The gap between available work-life balance initiatives and their practical effectiveness in reducing stress among older professionals remains inadequately addressed in the literature, hindering the development of targeted interventions (Uche, 2023).
