Background of the Study
Regular physical exercise is a key factor in promoting healthy aging and preventing chronic diseases among older adults. In Ekiti State, where the aging population is growing, engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to improve mobility, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. Exercise helps to mitigate the effects of age-related declines by enhancing cardiovascular health, maintaining muscle mass, and reducing the risk of falls and other injuries (Olatunji, 2023). In addition, physical activity is associated with better mental health outcomes, including reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, which are common among older populations. Despite these benefits, many older adults in Ekiti State lead sedentary lifestyles due to cultural norms, limited access to recreational facilities, and a lack of awareness regarding the benefits of exercise.

Community-based fitness programs and structured exercise initiatives can play a vital role in encouraging older adults to adopt an active lifestyle. Such programs not only provide opportunities for physical activity but also foster social interactions, which can further contribute to emotional well-being. However, challenges such as infrastructural limitations, safety concerns, and economic constraints often hinder participation in exercise programs among the elderly. Understanding the factors that influence exercise participation is crucial for designing effective interventions that promote healthy aging in Ekiti State (Akinola, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
In Ekiti State, the low levels of physical activity among older adults contribute significantly to the prevalence of chronic diseases and functional decline. Despite the known benefits of exercise, many older individuals do not engage in regular physical activity due to barriers such as inadequate access to safe exercise spaces, cultural perceptions that discourage active aging, and limited health education. This sedentary behavior increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and mental health disorders, thereby reducing overall quality of life and increasing healthcare costs (Babatunde, 2023). Moreover, existing community-based exercise programs are often underutilized due to poor outreach and insufficient support. The gap between the potential benefits of exercise and the actual participation levels among older adults in Ekiti State underscores the need for targeted interventions that can promote healthy aging. Without effective strategies to increase physical activity, the burden of age-related health issues is likely to escalate, placing additional strain on the healthcare system (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current levels of physical activity among older adults in Ekiti State.
  2. To examine the barriers to exercise participation among this population.
  3. To propose community-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy aging.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of exercise participation among older adults in Ekiti State?
  2. What factors hinder regular physical activity among older individuals?
  3. What interventions can effectively promote exercise and healthy aging in this population?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Low levels of physical activity are significantly associated with poorer health outcomes among older adults.
  2. Cultural and infrastructural barriers contribute to reduced exercise participation.
  3. Community-based exercise programs will significantly improve health indicators among older people.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on older adults (aged 60 and above) in selected urban and rural communities in Ekiti State. Data will be collected via health assessments, surveys, and focus groups. Limitations include potential self-report bias and variability in program availability.

Definitions of Terms

  • Healthy Aging: The process of developing and maintaining functional ability that enables well-being in older age.
  • Exercise: Physical activities undertaken to improve health and fitness.
  • Older People: Individuals aged 60 years and above.
