Background of the Study
Play therapy has emerged as a compelling approach to managing anxiety disorders among children, offering a developmentally appropriate means of expression and emotional healing. In Nasarawa State, where childhood anxiety is increasingly recognized as a public health concern, play therapy is being adopted in various clinical and educational settings. This therapeutic modality utilizes play—a natural medium for children—to facilitate communication, build trust, and help children process emotions that are often difficult to verbalize (Chukwu, 2023). The use of play in therapy aligns with the understanding that children learn and express themselves differently from adults, making traditional talk therapies less effective for this population.
Anxiety disorders in children can manifest as excessive worry, fear, and behavioral changes that impede academic performance and social interactions. The non-threatening nature of play therapy allows children to explore these emotions in a safe environment, thereby reducing the symptoms of anxiety. Recent empirical studies have highlighted the efficacy of play therapy in lowering anxiety levels and improving overall emotional regulation among children (Bello, 2024). In Nasarawa State, the adoption of play therapy is particularly promising given the limited availability of child-centric mental health interventions. However, despite its potential, there remains a paucity of localized research evaluating its effectiveness in this region.
The cultural context of Nasarawa State plays a significant role in shaping both the manifestation of anxiety disorders and the receptiveness to therapeutic interventions. Traditional beliefs about mental health and child development may influence how play therapy is perceived by caregivers and educators. Additionally, the integration of play therapy into existing mental health frameworks requires careful consideration of resource allocation, therapist training, and community engagement. Recent studies suggest that when these factors are optimally aligned, play therapy can lead to marked improvements in children’s mental health outcomes, fostering resilience and adaptive coping strategies (Olawale, 2025).
Given these developments, it is crucial to systematically evaluate the impact of play therapy on managing anxiety disorders among children in Nasarawa State. This study will explore how play therapy interventions are implemented in various settings, the challenges encountered, and the measurable benefits in terms of symptom reduction and improved emotional functioning. The goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations that can guide the broader application of play therapy as a cost-effective, culturally sensitive intervention for childhood anxiety.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of play therapy as an effective intervention for childhood anxiety, there is limited research evaluating its practical impact in Nasarawa State. Anxiety disorders among children are a significant concern, with manifestations that affect academic performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life. While play therapy offers a promising alternative to traditional treatments, the lack of systematic evaluation in the local context hinders the understanding of its efficacy. Several challenges contribute to this gap, including limited professional training, resource constraints, and cultural barriers that may affect both acceptance and implementation of play therapy (Ibrahim, 2023).
In Nasarawa State, the mental health infrastructure for children is often underdeveloped, and conventional therapies may not address the unique needs of younger populations. As a result, children suffering from anxiety disorders may not receive interventions that are tailored to their developmental stage. Moreover, the existing studies primarily focus on urban centers, leaving rural areas underrepresented. This imbalance raises questions about the generalizability of play therapy outcomes across diverse socio-economic and cultural settings. Additionally, the stigma associated with mental health issues often discourages families from seeking help, further complicating the assessment of play therapy’s effectiveness (Emeka, 2024).
The present study seeks to bridge this research gap by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of play therapy as a tool for managing anxiety disorders among children in Nasarawa State. It will assess the intervention’s effectiveness in reducing anxiety symptoms, examine implementation challenges, and explore the perceptions of caregivers and practitioners. The findings are expected to offer valuable insights into the scalability of play therapy interventions in resource-limited settings and provide recommendations for optimizing therapeutic practices in the region (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on children aged 6–14 years receiving play therapy in selected mental health clinics and schools in Nasarawa State. Data will be collected through pre- and post-intervention assessments and interviews with therapists and caregivers. Limitations include potential variability in therapy delivery and cultural factors influencing parental consent and participation.
