Background of the Study:
Smoking is a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide, with lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer being closely linked to tobacco use. In Kaduna State, the prevalence of smoking has become a major public health concern. Despite public health campaigns aimed at reducing tobacco use, cultural acceptance and social norms continue to promote smoking, particularly among men and adolescents (Okeke, 2023). The inhalation of tobacco smoke introduces a host of carcinogens and toxins into the respiratory system, damaging lung tissue and impairing pulmonary function. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that smokers are at a significantly increased risk of developing lung diseases compared to non-smokers (Aminu, 2024).

The urbanization and stress associated with modern lifestyles in Kaduna State have contributed to an increase in smoking rates. Moreover, the aggressive marketing strategies employed by tobacco companies, combined with inadequate regulation and enforcement, have further exacerbated the issue. The economic burden of smoking-related diseases is considerable, placing strain on both the healthcare system and individual households. In addition to direct health impacts, smoking is also associated with reduced quality of life, increased healthcare costs, and productivity losses. Recent research highlights the importance of robust tobacco control policies, including taxation, advertising restrictions, and cessation support, in reducing smoking prevalence and related health outcomes (Ibrahim, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate the impact of smoking on lung disease prevalence in Kaduna State by examining smoking behaviors, lung health indicators, and the effectiveness of current tobacco control measures.

Statement of the Problem :
In Kaduna State, lung diseases remain a significant health challenge, largely due to the high prevalence of smoking. Despite efforts to curb tobacco use, a substantial portion of the population continues to engage in smoking, leading to increased incidences of COPD, lung cancer, and other respiratory ailments (Umar, 2023). The persistent cultural acceptance of smoking, combined with aggressive tobacco marketing and insufficient regulation, has contributed to a public health crisis. Patients with smoking-related lung diseases face not only diminished quality of life but also high healthcare costs and premature mortality. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive smoking cessation programs and public education campaigns exacerbates the problem. The gap between policy initiatives and actual smoking behaviors in Kaduna State suggests that current interventions may be inadequate in addressing the root causes of tobacco use and its consequences. Without a targeted approach to reducing smoking rates, the burden of lung diseases will continue to grow, placing additional pressure on the healthcare system and hindering economic productivity (Saleh, 2024). This study aims to systematically investigate the relationship between smoking and lung disease prevalence, identify key contributing factors, and propose effective tobacco control strategies tailored to the context of Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of smoking in Kaduna State.
  • To assess the correlation between smoking and lung disease prevalence.
  • To recommend improved tobacco control measures.

Research Questions:

  • What is the smoking prevalence in Kaduna State?
  • How does smoking correlate with the incidence of lung diseases?
  • What interventions can effectively reduce smoking rates?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: High smoking prevalence is significantly associated with increased lung disease incidence.
  • H2: Smokers have a higher risk of developing COPD and lung cancer compared to non-smokers.
  • H3: Enhanced tobacco control measures will reduce smoking prevalence and lung disease rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on adult populations in urban and rural areas of Kaduna State. Limitations include potential underreporting of smoking habits and variability in diagnostic criteria for lung diseases.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Smoking: The inhalation of tobacco smoke from cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
  • Lung Diseases: Disorders affecting the lungs, including COPD and lung cancer.
  • Tobacco Control: Policies and interventions aimed at reducing tobacco use.
