ANALYSIS OF PROBLEMS OF STUDENT TEACHERS DURING TEACHING PRACTICE IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to analyze of problems of student teachers during teaching practice in Nigeria. in Ini local government area of Akwa Ibom state. Specifically, the study aimed at ascertaining the key challenges experienced by history students-teachers, investigating the relationship between these challenges facing student-teachers and their performance, and identifying effective and implementable measures through which students-teachers experience can be enhanced and made favourable. The study was anchored by Mitzel (1969) model. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection which was raised against a four Likert scale while the data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.  A total of 39 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of student-teachers from selected public and private secondary schools in Ini  local government area of Akwaibom state.  Out of the 39 respondents, 38 responses were received and 35 validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that Student-teachers do encounter challenges while on teaching practice centres. The study also disclosed that the problems faced by student-teachers during teaching practices has a significant effect on their teaching experiences. The study therefore recommends that adequate curriculum guidelines, facilities, reference materials like textbooks e.t.c. should be made available to facilitate effective and efficient teaching and learning.
