Background of the Study:
Mobile health units (MHUs) are an innovative approach to extending healthcare services to underserved and remote populations. In Kaduna State, MHUs are deployed to bridge the gap between communities with limited access to fixed healthcare facilities and the essential medical services they require. MHUs provide a range of services including primary care, immunizations, and health education, thereby reducing the burden of travel and associated costs for patients (Okeke, 2023). These units are particularly valuable in rural areas, where geographical barriers and poor transportation infrastructure often limit healthcare utilization. By bringing healthcare directly to the community, MHUs can facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving health outcomes (Aminu, 2024).
The implementation of MHUs in Kaduna State has been met with mixed results. While many communities have benefited from increased access to care, challenges such as limited funding, logistical constraints, and inconsistent service schedules have hindered the full potential of mobile health services (Ibrahim, 2025). Furthermore, the sustainability of MHUs depends on robust support from both government and non-governmental organizations, as well as the effective integration of mobile services with the broader healthcare system. Evaluating the effectiveness of MHUs in Kaduna State is crucial for identifying best practices and addressing the remaining gaps in healthcare access. This study aims to assess the role of mobile health units in bridging healthcare gaps, focusing on service coverage, patient satisfaction, and overall impact on healthcare utilization.
Statement of the Problem:
In Kaduna State, despite the presence of mobile health units intended to improve healthcare access in remote and underserved areas, significant challenges persist. Inconsistent service schedules, limited resources, and logistical issues have reduced the effectiveness of these units. As a result, many communities still experience gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in preventive care and chronic disease management (Umar, 2023). The lack of integration between MHUs and fixed healthcare facilities further undermines continuity of care, leading to fragmented services and diminished patient outcomes. Additionally, low levels of awareness about the availability of mobile health services and limited community engagement hinder their utilization. This situation underscores the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the role of MHUs in Kaduna State to determine how well they are bridging the healthcare gap and what improvements are necessary to maximize their impact.
