Background of the Study:
Healthcare infrastructure is a critical determinant of patient satisfaction and overall quality of care. In Plateau State, inadequate healthcare infrastructure—characterized by outdated facilities, insufficient medical equipment, and understaffed clinics—directly impacts patient experiences and outcomes (Okeke, 2023). Patients often encounter long waiting times, limited availability of essential services, and substandard facility conditions, all of which contribute to dissatisfaction. The physical environment of healthcare facilities plays an important role in shaping perceptions of care quality; poorly maintained buildings and equipment can undermine patient trust and deter individuals from seeking care. In Plateau State, these infrastructural deficiencies are particularly pronounced in rural areas, where resources are scarce and investment in health facilities is limited (Ibrahim, 2024).

The impact of infrastructure on patient satisfaction is not merely about aesthetics but also about the functionality and reliability of services provided. When healthcare infrastructure is inadequate, the efficiency of service delivery is compromised, leading to delayed diagnoses, interrupted treatments, and a higher incidence of medical errors. This can result in poorer health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Moreover, the lack of modern equipment and proper sanitation facilities further diminishes the quality of care, thereby reducing patient satisfaction (Aminu, 2024). Recent studies emphasize that improving healthcare infrastructure is essential for enhancing service delivery and fostering a patient-centered approach in healthcare systems (Fatima, 2025). This study aims to evaluate how inadequate healthcare infrastructure in Plateau State affects patient satisfaction and to propose recommendations for infrastructure improvement.

Statement of the Problem:
In Plateau State, inadequate healthcare infrastructure significantly undermines patient satisfaction and the overall quality of care. Many healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas, suffer from outdated buildings, insufficient medical equipment, and chronic understaffing. These deficiencies lead to long waiting times, reduced service efficiency, and compromised patient safety. The substandard physical environment not only frustrates patients but also affects clinical outcomes by delaying treatment and increasing the likelihood of errors. Despite government efforts to upgrade healthcare facilities, persistent infrastructural challenges continue to negatively impact patient experiences and outcomes (Umar, 2023). The gap between the expected standards of care and the reality in many health facilities contributes to low public trust in the healthcare system, further reducing healthcare utilization and exacerbating health disparities (Saleh, 2024). This study seeks to investigate the impact of inadequate healthcare infrastructure on patient satisfaction in Plateau State, with the aim of identifying critical areas for improvement and recommending strategies to enhance the quality of healthcare services.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the current state of healthcare infrastructure in Plateau State.
  • To evaluate patient satisfaction levels in relation to facility conditions and service delivery.
  • To propose recommendations for improving healthcare infrastructure and patient satisfaction.

Research Questions:

  • What is the current quality of healthcare infrastructure in Plateau State?
  • How does infrastructure quality affect patient satisfaction and care outcomes?
  • What interventions can improve infrastructure and, consequently, patient satisfaction?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Inadequate healthcare infrastructure is significantly associated with lower patient satisfaction.
  • H2: Poor facility conditions contribute to increased waiting times and reduced service efficiency.
  • H3: Investments in modernizing healthcare infrastructure will improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on selected healthcare facilities in urban and rural areas of Plateau State. Limitations include variability in infrastructure standards and challenges in obtaining objective measures of patient satisfaction.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Healthcare Infrastructure: The physical facilities, equipment, and systems necessary for delivering healthcare services.
  • Patient Satisfaction: The level of contentment expressed by patients regarding the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
  • Service Delivery: The manner in which healthcare services are provided to patients.
