Background of the study:
University campuses require efficient utility management systems to maintain safe, conducive environments for learning and research. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, aging pipeline networks and inadequate monitoring systems have resulted in frequent leaks, causing water wastage, property damage, and potential health hazards. IoT-based smart pipeline leak detection systems offer an innovative solution by providing real-time monitoring, early detection, and rapid response to pipeline failures (Ahmed, 2023). These systems use networks of sensors, wireless communication, and advanced data analytics to continuously monitor pipeline integrity and detect anomalies that may indicate leaks (Umar, 2024). The evolution of IoT technology has transformed traditional, reactive pipeline monitoring methods into proactive, data-driven processes that enhance safety and reliability. In university campuses, where uninterrupted utility services are critical, adopting smart leak detection can prevent costly disruptions and safeguard valuable infrastructure (Balogun, 2025). Additionally, integrating these systems into campus management frameworks supports coordinated maintenance efforts and informed long-term planning. This proactive approach not only minimizes repair costs and water loss but also contributes to creating a safer, more sustainable campus environment.

Statement of the problem:
University campuses in Gombe LGA are challenged by outdated pipeline monitoring systems that lead to frequent leaks and subsequent water wastage, infrastructure damage, and health risks. Traditional methods, reliant on periodic manual inspections, are inadequate for early leak detection, resulting in delayed responses and escalated repair costs (Bello, 2023). The absence of real-time detection mechanisms hampers the ability of maintenance teams to intervene promptly, thereby increasing the impact of leaks. In addition, the lack of integrated data analytics prevents effective prediction of leak occurrences, limiting proactive maintenance strategies. These inefficiencies compromise campus operations, burdening financial resources and endangering the well-being of students and staff. Addressing these challenges by implementing an IoT-based smart pipeline leak detection system is essential to ensure timely maintenance, reduce water loss, and protect campus infrastructure.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To design an IoT-based smart pipeline leak detection system for university campuses.

  2. To assess the system’s effectiveness in providing real-time alerts and reducing water wastage.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating IoT-based leak detection systems into existing campus infrastructure.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is the IoT-based leak detection system in identifying pipeline leaks in real time?

  2. What challenges are associated with implementing IoT technologies in pipeline monitoring on university campuses?

  3. How can IoT-based leak detection systems improve the maintenance and management of campus pipelines?

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it explores the potential of IoT technology to enhance pipeline monitoring and leak detection in university campuses. The findings will provide valuable insights for campus administrators and maintenance teams, enabling them to reduce water wastage, minimize infrastructure damage, and ensure a safer, more sustainable learning environment.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the investigation and evaluation of IoT-based smart pipeline leak detection systems in university campuses in Gombe LGA, Gombe State. It does not extend to other regions or broader applications of IoT in utility management.

Definitions of terms:

  1. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that collect and exchange data to enhance system monitoring and management.

  2. Smart Pipeline Leak Detection: A system that uses sensors and data analytics to identify and alert about pipeline leaks in real time.

  3. University Campuses: Academic institutions with complex infrastructural systems providing education and research facilities.
