Background of the study:
University clinics are crucial for ensuring the health and well-being of students and staff; however, many face challenges in providing prompt emergency care. In Minna LGA, Niger State, university clinics often operate under constraints such as limited resources, delayed response times, and fragmented communication systems. IoT-based smart emergency response systems offer a transformative solution by enabling real-time communication, monitoring, and coordination during emergencies (Chukwu, 2023). By using interconnected devices like wearable sensors, automated alert systems, and centralized data hubs, these systems can significantly reduce response times and improve care quality during critical moments. Advances in IoT technology have revolutionized healthcare delivery by allowing continuous monitoring of patient vital signs and environmental conditions. This proactive approach facilitates early intervention and streamlines emergency response protocols (Adebola, 2024). In the context of university clinics, rapid decision-making is essential; thus, smart emergency response systems can bridge the gap between patient needs and available medical services. Globally, educational institutions are increasingly adopting digital health solutions to improve resource allocation and patient outcomes. In Minna LGA, implementing such systems can lead to reduced mortality rates, enhanced emergency preparedness, and improved overall clinical efficiency (Okoro, 2025). Moreover, the continuous data flow from IoT devices supports detailed analytics for future research and policy improvements in emergency healthcare. The collaborative nature of these systems also ensures that healthcare providers, emergency services, and administrative personnel are connected, fostering coordinated responses during crises.

Statement of the problem:
University clinics in Minna LGA, Niger State, face significant challenges in delivering timely and effective emergency care. Traditional emergency response methods rely heavily on manual communication and periodic monitoring, which can delay critical interventions. The absence of an integrated, real-time alert system hinders rapid decision-making, ultimately compromising patient outcomes (Babatunde, 2023). Inadequate real-time monitoring prevents the early detection of life-threatening conditions, leaving clinicians unprepared for sudden emergencies. Additionally, fragmented communication channels result in delays and inefficiencies that exacerbate patient conditions and strain limited resources. These challenges are compounded by insufficient integration of technological tools into existing clinical infrastructures, leading to reactive rather than proactive responses (Fasasi, 2024). The current situation not only places patients at risk but also burdens healthcare workers with outdated procedures that impede timely care. Addressing these shortcomings through the implementation of an IoT-based smart emergency response system is crucial for improving the overall quality of care in university clinics. By enabling continuous monitoring and rapid information sharing, the proposed system could dramatically reduce response times and improve patient survival rates, ultimately transforming emergency healthcare delivery on campus.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating IoT solutions into existing healthcare infrastructures in university clinics.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it explores the potential of IoT technologies to revolutionize emergency healthcare in university clinics. By providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of smart emergency response systems, the findings can inform policy and improve patient care. The study’s insights will benefit healthcare administrators, policymakers, and technology developers in enhancing emergency preparedness and response.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the implementation and evaluation of IoT-based smart emergency response systems in university clinics in Minna LGA, Niger State. It does not cover broader applications of IoT in other healthcare settings.
