Background of the study
Navigating a large university campus can be a daunting task for first‑year students who are unfamiliar with the environment. In Minna LGA, Niger State, many freshmen struggle with orientation, leading to stress and reduced academic performance. IoT‑based smart campus navigation systems offer a viable solution by providing real‑time location tracking, digital maps, and interactive guidance to help new students find their way efficiently (Suleiman, 2023). These systems integrate GPS, indoor positioning sensors, and mobile applications to deliver personalized navigation assistance, ensuring that students can easily locate lecture halls, libraries, and administrative offices (Bello, 2024).

The implementation of smart navigation systems not only enhances the student experience but also contributes to campus safety and resource management. By tracking movement patterns, the system can provide valuable data for campus planning and security. The real‑time feedback mechanism allows for dynamic route adjustments in response to construction work or other temporary obstructions, ensuring optimal navigational support at all times (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, such systems can be integrated with academic calendars and event schedules, enabling first‑year students to manage their time effectively.

Despite the promising advantages, several challenges hinder the adoption of IoT‑based navigation solutions in Minna LGA. Issues such as poor network connectivity, high implementation costs, and the need for continuous system maintenance pose significant barriers (Okoro, 2023). Additionally, concerns about data privacy and the security of location data must be addressed to gain user trust. Nevertheless, the potential benefits of improved orientation, enhanced campus safety, and better academic performance justify the need for further exploration of these systems (Aminu, 2024).

This study seeks to analyze the current state of campus navigation challenges faced by first‑year students in Minna LGA and evaluate the effectiveness of IoT‑based smart navigation systems. By examining technical, operational, and security aspects, the research aims to propose a comprehensive framework that can be adopted by university administrations to enhance the overall campus experience for new students (Suleiman, 2023).

Statement of the problem
First‑year students in Minna LGA face considerable difficulties navigating sprawling university campuses, which often results in late arrivals, increased stress, and decreased academic engagement. The current manual orientation programs are insufficient to meet the diverse needs of incoming students, leading to confusion and inefficiencies (Bello, 2024). Moreover, the lack of real‑time navigational assistance further exacerbates these challenges, leaving students to rely on static maps and verbal directions that are often outdated or inaccurate. This not only affects their academic performance but also poses safety risks, especially during emergencies.

Furthermore, traditional navigation aids do not provide dynamic updates or personalized routing based on real‑time campus conditions. Inadequate digital infrastructure and limited technical support hinder the effective implementation of advanced navigational tools. Issues such as intermittent network connectivity and the high cost of IoT devices further restrict the scalability of such systems (Okoro, 2023). Additionally, concerns regarding data privacy and the potential misuse of location information create reluctance among stakeholders to fully adopt IoT‑based solutions (Ibrahim, 2024).

This study aims to address these issues by investigating the feasibility of deploying an IoT‑based smart campus navigation system tailored to the needs of first‑year students. The research will evaluate existing orientation methods, identify technical and operational challenges, and explore the benefits of real‑time navigation assistance in improving campus accessibility and safety. The ultimate objective is to develop a strategic framework that enhances the campus experience, reduces navigational errors, and promotes a safer, more welcoming environment for new students (Aminu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  2. To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of IoT‑based smart navigation systems on campus.

  3. To develop a comprehensive framework for implementing these systems in university settings.

Research questions

  1. What are the main navigational challenges for first‑year students on campus?

  3. What operational challenges must be addressed for successful system implementation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores innovative IoT‑based solutions to improve campus navigation for first‑year students. The findings will provide valuable insights for university administrators and technology developers by demonstrating how real‑time digital guidance can enhance orientation, promote safety, and improve academic performance. The proposed framework is expected to reduce stress and confusion among new students, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and efficient campus environment (Suleiman, 2023; Bello, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the evaluation of IoT‑based smart campus navigation systems for first‑year students in Minna LGA, focusing on technical, operational, and security aspects. Broader campus management issues are not addressed.
