Background of the study
Efficient fee collection is essential for the smooth operation of educational institutions. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, traditional fee collection methods in secondary schools are often plagued by inefficiencies, delays, and errors. An IoT‑based smart e‑payment system presents an innovative solution that leverages real‑time data processing, secure digital transactions, and automated record‑keeping to streamline the fee collection process (Adewale, 2023). This system integrates IoT devices with payment gateways and school management systems to facilitate seamless and secure transactions. By automating fee collection, schools can minimize human errors, reduce processing time, and enhance transparency in financial management (Ibrahim, 2024).

The adoption of e‑payment systems in education is part of a broader digital transformation agenda aimed at improving administrative efficiency and service delivery. In the context of Lafia LGA, implementing an IoT‑based system can reduce the reliance on cash transactions, which are susceptible to fraud and mismanagement. Furthermore, real‑time monitoring of transactions enables schools to track payments accurately and promptly identify discrepancies. The integration of biometric verification and secure data encryption further enhances the system’s reliability and safety (Okeke, 2023).

However, the transition to an IoT‑based e‑payment system faces several challenges, including the high initial cost of technology deployment, limited digital literacy among school staff and parents, and concerns regarding data security and privacy (Chinwe, 2023). Additionally, interoperability with existing financial systems and ensuring consistent network connectivity are critical factors that need to be addressed. Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of cost reduction, improved financial accountability, and enhanced service delivery underscore the need for this study (Adewale, 2023).

This study aims to explore the design and implementation of an IoT‑based smart e‑payment system for secondary school fees collection in Lafia LGA. By analyzing technical requirements, operational challenges, and economic feasibility, the research seeks to propose a comprehensive framework that can facilitate the smooth transition from traditional to digital payment methods in the educational sector (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Secondary schools in Lafia LGA continue to experience significant challenges with traditional fee collection methods, including delayed payments, inaccuracies in record‑keeping, and high risks of fraud. Manual fee collection processes often result in long queues, administrative bottlenecks, and errors that compromise financial transparency (Okeke, 2023). The lack of a centralized, automated system further exacerbates these issues, leading to inefficiencies that affect both school operations and parental satisfaction.

Furthermore, the reliance on cash transactions exposes schools to potential security risks and misappropriation of funds. The absence of real‑time monitoring systems prevents timely reconciliation of accounts, resulting in financial discrepancies and challenges in audit processes. Inadequate training and limited digital literacy among school staff compound these challenges, making it difficult to transition to modern digital payment systems (Chinwe, 2023). Additionally, concerns about data security and the potential for cyberattacks pose significant barriers to the adoption of e‑payment solutions in the education sector (Adewale, 2023).

This study seeks to address these problems by investigating the feasibility of implementing an IoT‑based smart e‑payment system for fee collection in secondary schools in Lafia LGA. The research will assess the current shortcomings of manual fee collection methods, examine the technological and operational challenges of digital systems, and explore strategies to ensure data security and user adoption. The ultimate goal is to develop a robust framework that can improve the efficiency, accuracy, and security of fee collection processes, thereby enhancing financial management and accountability in the educational sector (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the inefficiencies in the current fee collection methods in secondary schools in Lafia LGA.

  2. To evaluate the feasibility of implementing an IoT‑based smart e‑payment system.

  3. To propose a comprehensive framework for secure and efficient digital fee collection.

Research questions

  1. What are the major challenges in traditional fee collection systems?

  2. How can IoT‑based e‑payment systems improve transaction efficiency and accuracy?

  3. What measures are necessary to ensure data security and user adoption in these systems?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a digital solution to the inefficiencies of traditional fee collection in secondary schools. The IoT‑based smart e‑payment system promises enhanced transparency, reduced errors, and improved financial management. By providing a robust framework for secure digital transactions, the study will benefit school administrators, parents, and policymakers. The findings are expected to support broader digital transformation initiatives within the education sector, leading to more efficient resource management and better service delivery (Adewale, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the design and implementation of an IoT‑based smart e‑payment system for secondary school fee collection in Lafia LGA, focusing on technical, operational, and economic aspects. Broader educational financial management is not examined.

Definitions of terms

  1. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that exchange real‑time data.

  2. E‑Payment System: A digital method for processing monetary transactions electronically.

  3. Fee Collection: The process of gathering payments for educational services.
