Background of the Study:
Rural poverty is a pervasive challenge that significantly affects access to healthcare, particularly in regions like Plateau State. In rural communities, poverty is often intertwined with limited infrastructure, low educational levels, and inadequate healthcare facilities. These factors create significant barriers to obtaining timely and effective medical care (Okeke, 2023). Residents in rural areas of Plateau State frequently encounter long distances to the nearest health facility, poor road conditions, and a lack of transportation, all of which impede access to essential services.

Economic constraints further exacerbate these challenges, as impoverished households may be unable to afford medical expenses or transportation costs. The absence of health insurance or social protection mechanisms means that many individuals must pay out-of-pocket for healthcare, which can deter them from seeking treatment until conditions become severe. Additionally, cultural factors and low health literacy contribute to delays in seeking care, as individuals may rely on traditional remedies instead of accessing formal medical services (Ibrahim, 2024).

Government initiatives aimed at improving rural healthcare have had limited success in Plateau State due to inadequate funding and infrastructure. Mobile health clinics and outreach programs have been introduced as stop-gap measures; however, these interventions often lack sustainability and fail to reach all underserved communities. Recent research highlights that improving access to healthcare in rural areas requires a multi-pronged approach that addresses both the economic and infrastructural barriers (Fatima, 2025). This study will examine the impact of rural poverty on healthcare access in Plateau State by analyzing socioeconomic data, healthcare utilization patterns, and community perceptions regarding the quality and availability of services.

Statement of the Problem :
In Plateau State, rural poverty severely limits access to healthcare, resulting in delayed treatment and poorer health outcomes. Many rural residents face significant financial and logistical barriers that prevent them from accessing quality medical care. Long distances to health facilities, high transportation costs, and the lack of affordable healthcare services compel many individuals to forgo timely treatment (Umar, 2023). The inadequacies in healthcare infrastructure and the absence of health insurance further contribute to these challenges. Consequently, preventable diseases often progress to advanced stages, placing an enormous burden on both individuals and the healthcare system.

The pervasive nature of poverty in rural Plateau State also affects health-seeking behavior, with many individuals opting for traditional remedies or delaying medical consultations until conditions become critical. This delay not only worsens health outcomes but also increases healthcare costs due to more complex and prolonged treatments. The current government and non-government interventions have not sufficiently addressed these structural barriers, and there is a pressing need for a comprehensive evaluation of how rural poverty impacts healthcare access.

This study seeks to investigate the extent to which rural poverty affects access to healthcare in Plateau State and to identify the key economic and infrastructural barriers that contribute to this issue.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess healthcare access among rural populations in Plateau State.
  • To identify the economic and infrastructural barriers to healthcare in rural areas.
  • To recommend strategies to improve access to healthcare in impoverished rural communities.

Research Questions:

  • How does rural poverty affect healthcare access in Plateau State?
  • What are the primary barriers to healthcare utilization among rural populations?
  • What interventions can effectively improve healthcare access in rural areas?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Higher levels of rural poverty are significantly associated with reduced access to healthcare services.
  • H2: Economic and transportation barriers mediate the relationship between rural poverty and healthcare access.
  • H3: Enhanced rural healthcare infrastructure will improve healthcare utilization.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on rural communities in Plateau State. Limitations include potential variability in infrastructure across regions and reliance on self-reported healthcare utilization data.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Rural Poverty: Economic deprivation experienced in non-urban areas, often characterized by limited resources and infrastructure.
  • Healthcare Access: The ability to obtain necessary medical services in a timely manner.
  • Utilization Patterns: Trends in how frequently and effectively healthcare services are used.
