Background of the Study:
Food insecurity, defined as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, is a pressing public health issue in Taraba State. In many communities throughout Taraba, factors such as low agricultural productivity, climate variability, and economic instability contribute to widespread food insecurity. This condition adversely affects public health by leading to malnutrition, weakened immune systems, and increased susceptibility to infectious diseases (Okeke, 2023). Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, as inadequate nutrition during critical developmental periods can have long-lasting health consequences.

In Taraba State, food insecurity is often linked to a combination of environmental and socio-economic factors. Frequent droughts and erratic rainfall patterns have disrupted traditional farming practices, leading to decreased crop yields and increased reliance on food imports. Economic hardship further exacerbates the situation, as many households cannot afford diverse and nutritious diets. Additionally, inadequate storage and distribution systems contribute to food wastage and reduced access to fresh produce, further limiting nutritional intake (Aminu, 2024).

Public health interventions aimed at addressing food insecurity have included food aid, nutritional education, and support for sustainable agricultural practices. However, the persistence of food insecurity suggests that these interventions have not fully addressed the underlying structural issues. There is a need for comprehensive research that examines how food insecurity impacts public health in Taraba State and identifies effective strategies to mitigate these effects. This study will assess the relationship between food insecurity and various health outcomes, including malnutrition rates, incidence of infectious diseases, and overall community well-being. By doing so, it seeks to inform policy decisions and develop integrated interventions that enhance food security and improve public health outcomes in the region (Fatima, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Food insecurity remains a critical challenge in Taraba State, significantly impacting public health. Despite various government and non-government initiatives to improve food availability, many communities continue to experience chronic food shortages. This persistent insecurity contributes to high rates of malnutrition, particularly among children and pregnant women, and increases the vulnerability of the population to infectious diseases (Umar, 2023). The combination of environmental challenges, such as droughts and erratic weather, with economic hardship has created a situation where nutritional needs are not met, leading to adverse health outcomes.

Furthermore, the lack of efficient food storage and distribution systems exacerbates the problem by increasing food wastage and reducing access to fresh, nutritious foods. The limited agricultural productivity in certain areas further compounds food insecurity, creating a cycle that undermines public health and economic development. Inadequate dietary diversity and insufficient nutrient intake have been linked to weakened immune systems and higher rates of illness, placing additional strain on healthcare services (Saleh, 2024).

This study seeks to address these issues by systematically examining the impact of food insecurity on public health in Taraba State. By identifying the key factors that contribute to food insecurity and evaluating their health consequences, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for integrated interventions. These interventions will focus on improving agricultural practices, strengthening food distribution networks, and enhancing public health strategies to reduce the burden of malnutrition and related diseases.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence and determinants of food insecurity in Taraba State.
  • To evaluate the impact of food insecurity on public health outcomes, particularly malnutrition and disease incidence.
  • To recommend integrated strategies for improving food security and public health.

Research Questions:

  • What is the prevalence of food insecurity in Taraba State?
  • How does food insecurity affect nutritional and health outcomes?
  • What interventions can effectively mitigate food insecurity and its public health impact?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: High levels of food insecurity are significantly associated with increased malnutrition rates.
  • H2: Food insecurity is correlated with higher incidence of infectious diseases.
  • H3: Integrated agricultural and public health interventions will improve food security and health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on selected rural communities in Taraba State. Limitations include seasonal variations in food availability and reliance on self-reported dietary information.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Food Insecurity: The lack of consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food.
  • Malnutrition: A condition resulting from inadequate or unbalanced nutritional intake.
  • Public Health Outcomes: Indicators of community health status.
