Background of the Study :
Efficient electricity usage is critical for the sustainability and cost management of university campuses. Traditional electricity metering methods often lead to inaccurate billing, energy wastage, and inefficient consumption monitoring. In Sokoto North LGA, universities face challenges in accurately tracking energy usage due to outdated metering systems and manual data collection. The adoption of IoT-based smart electricity metering systems presents a promising solution by enabling real-time monitoring, automated data collection, and enhanced energy management. This study aims to analyze the adoption of IoT for smart electricity metering in university campuses. The proposed system will deploy smart meters that continuously record energy consumption and transmit data via wireless networks to a centralized platform. Advanced analytics will be applied to detect anomalies, optimize energy usage, and provide actionable insights to facility managers (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the system will allow for remote monitoring and control, enabling timely interventions and reducing overall energy costs. Previous research has shown that IoT-based metering systems can significantly improve the accuracy of energy consumption data and facilitate more effective energy conservation strategies (Olu, 2024). This study will evaluate the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and user acceptance of such a system in the context of a university campus in Sokoto North LGA. Field testing will be conducted to measure improvements in billing accuracy, energy efficiency, and operational performance. The insights gained will contribute to the development of a robust energy management framework that can be replicated in similar educational institutions facing energy management challenges (Adeniyi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
University campuses in Sokoto North LGA are burdened by outdated electricity metering systems that rely on manual data collection and are prone to errors. These systems often result in inaccurate billing, energy wastage, and a lack of detailed consumption data needed for effective energy management. The absence of real-time monitoring prevents timely detection of energy inefficiencies and hinders proactive maintenance, leading to increased operational costs. Moreover, the reliance on conventional metering does not support dynamic pricing or demand response initiatives, which are essential for optimizing energy usage in modern campuses. These issues are further exacerbated by the limited technical infrastructure and resources available in many educational institutions in the region. There is an urgent need for an IoT-based smart electricity metering system that can automate data collection, provide real-time analytics, and facilitate effective energy management. Such a system would not only enhance billing accuracy but also enable universities to implement energy-saving measures, reduce costs, and contribute to environmental sustainability. This study aims to address these challenges by evaluating the current state of IoT adoption for smart metering, identifying key barriers to implementation, and proposing strategies to overcome them. By providing a detailed analysis and field evaluation, the research seeks to demonstrate the potential benefits of transitioning to an IoT-enabled energy management system in university campuses (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To propose strategies for overcoming implementation challenges in resource-limited settings.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it examines the potential of IoT-based smart electricity metering to transform energy management in university campuses. By providing real-time data and analytics, the system can improve billing accuracy, reduce energy wastage, and lower operational costs. The findings will offer valuable insights for policymakers and educational institutions seeking to implement sustainable energy solutions in resource-constrained environments (Adeniyi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the analysis of IoT-based smart electricity metering systems in university campuses in Sokoto North LGA, Sokoto State, and does not extend to industrial or residential settings.
