Background of the Study :
Fire safety is a critical aspect of school administration, yet many secondary schools, particularly in resource-limited regions like Kafanchan LGA, Kaduna State, still rely on outdated manual fire detection methods. The integration of IoT technologies into fire detection systems offers an innovative solution to enhance safety and prevent catastrophic losses. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of IoT-based smart fire detection systems in secondary schools. The proposed system will incorporate a network of sensors capable of detecting smoke, temperature anomalies, and gas emissions. These sensors will transmit data in real time to a central monitoring unit, which will analyze the information using advanced algorithms to determine the likelihood of a fire incident. In the event of a potential fire, the system will automatically trigger alarms, notify emergency services, and initiate pre-defined safety protocols. The system’s real-time data transmission and analysis capabilities are expected to significantly reduce response times and mitigate the damage caused by fires. By integrating with school security systems, the IoT-based solution will also enable remote monitoring and management of fire safety protocols, ensuring that schools maintain a high standard of safety even during off-hours. Previous research has demonstrated that IoT solutions in fire detection can improve early warning systems and reduce overall risk (Ibrahim, 2023). This study will evaluate the implementation of such systems in secondary schools in Kafanchan LGA, focusing on cost-effectiveness, ease of deployment, and user satisfaction. The goal is to provide a scalable and robust smart fire detection system that enhances the safety of students and staff while offering a model that can be replicated in similar educational settings (Olu, 2024; Adeniran, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Secondary schools in Kafanchan LGA face significant challenges in ensuring effective fire safety due to outdated detection systems that rely heavily on manual monitoring. The absence of real-time fire detection increases the risk of delayed emergency responses, resulting in greater damage and potential loss of life. Traditional fire alarms are often prone to false alarms or, conversely, fail to detect early signs of fire, leaving school premises vulnerable. Furthermore, limited budgets and technical expertise in many schools prevent the adoption of advanced safety systems. There is an urgent need for an automated, IoT-based smart fire detection system that can continuously monitor environmental parameters, promptly detect anomalies, and trigger immediate alerts. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of IoT-enabled sensors integrated into a unified fire detection framework. The system will be designed to reduce false alarms and ensure rapid response times, thereby enhancing overall safety. Additionally, the study will examine the challenges associated with system installation, data transmission reliability, and user training. Addressing these challenges is crucial for developing a comprehensive fire safety solution that meets the specific needs of secondary schools in resource-constrained settings. Implementing such a system will not only improve emergency response but also provide valuable data for continuous improvement in fire safety management practices (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate an IoT-based smart fire detection system for secondary schools.

  • To assess the system’s ability to reduce response times and false alarms.

  • To provide recommendations for the scalable deployment of smart fire detection solutions.

Research Questions:

  • How effective is the IoT-based system in detecting fires in real time?

  • What are the operational challenges in deploying such a system in secondary schools?

  • How does the smart fire detection system improve overall safety and emergency response?

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it develops an IoT-based smart fire detection system designed to enhance the safety of secondary schools by enabling rapid detection and response to fire incidents. Improved monitoring and timely alerts will reduce potential damage and save lives, providing a scalable model for enhancing fire safety in educational institutions in resource-limited settings (Adeniran, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the evaluation of an IoT-based smart fire detection system in secondary schools in Kafanchan LGA, Kaduna State, and does not include broader applications in other public buildings.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Smart Fire Detection System: A system that uses IoT sensors to detect and alert on fire hazards in real time.

  2. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that communicate data to enhance system functionality.

  3. Real-Time Monitoring: Continuous collection and processing of data as events occur.
