Background of the Study :
Weather conditions play a critical role in agriculture, influencing crop yield and farming practices. Accurate, real-time weather data is essential for farmers to make informed decisions, yet traditional weather monitoring systems are often costly and energy-intensive. This study proposes the development of a low-power, IoT-enabled weather monitoring system tailored for farmers in Gombe LGA, Gombe State. The system will integrate low-power sensors to capture environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and wind speed. Utilizing IoT connectivity, the collected data will be transmitted to a centralized platform, where it can be accessed in real time via mobile applications. By focusing on energy efficiency, the system aims to extend battery life and reduce maintenance costs, making it an ideal solution for rural areas with limited access to power. The research will explore various wireless communication protocols, such as LoRa and ZigBee, to determine the most suitable option for long-range, low-power transmission. In addition, data will be stored in the cloud for historical analysis and forecasting, enabling farmers to plan their activities more effectively. The system will be designed with a user-friendly interface, ensuring that farmers with limited technical knowledge can easily interpret the data. This project not only addresses the need for affordable weather monitoring but also promotes precision agriculture by providing timely and accurate meteorological information. Ultimately, the proposed system is expected to enhance crop management, reduce resource wastage, and improve overall agricultural productivity in Gombe LGA (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem :
Farmers in Gombe LGA, Gombe State, often lack access to reliable and real-time weather information, which is crucial for making informed agricultural decisions. Traditional weather monitoring systems are typically expensive, consume high power, and are not optimized for rural environments, where energy resources are scarce. These limitations result in delayed or inaccurate weather forecasts, adversely affecting crop planning, irrigation scheduling, and pest management. The absence of an affordable, low-power system means that farmers are forced to rely on unreliable sources or outdated methods, leading to potential crop losses and reduced productivity. Additionally, the lack of real-time data hinders the ability to respond promptly to sudden weather changes, further exacerbating the risk of damage. This study aims to address these challenges by developing a low-power IoT-enabled weather monitoring system that provides accurate, real-time meteorological data tailored to the needs of local farmers. By utilizing energy-efficient sensors and cost-effective communication protocols, the system will ensure prolonged operation in remote areas. The integration of cloud-based storage and mobile applications will facilitate easy access to data and enhance decision-making processes. Addressing these issues is vital for improving agricultural practices, reducing losses, and boosting the overall productivity and sustainability of farming in Gombe LGA (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To design and implement a low-power IoT-enabled weather monitoring system.

  • To provide real-time and accurate weather data for farmers.

  • To evaluate the system’s energy efficiency and reliability in rural settings.

Research Questions:

  • Which low-power sensors and communication protocols are most effective for weather monitoring?

  • How can IoT technology improve real-time weather data collection for farmers?

  • What is the impact of accurate weather monitoring on agricultural productivity in Gombe LGA?

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant because it develops an affordable, low-power weather monitoring system that empowers farmers with real-time data to make informed decisions. The system’s energy efficiency and ease of use will enhance precision agriculture, reduce crop losses, and improve overall productivity in rural areas of Gombe LGA (Olu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the design and evaluation of the system in Gombe LGA and does not extend to other regions or large-scale agricultural trials.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that collect and exchange data.

  2. Low-Power Sensors: Devices designed to operate with minimal energy consumption.

  3. Weather Monitoring System: A system that collects and processes environmental data to provide weather forecasts.
