Background of the Study:
Noise pollution, often overlooked as an environmental hazard, poses significant health risks that can adversely affect the quality of life. In Benue State, rapid urbanization, increased vehicular traffic, industrial activities, and social events contribute to elevated noise levels, particularly in urban centers. Chronic exposure to high noise levels is associated with hearing impairment, stress, cardiovascular issues, and sleep disturbances (Okoro, 2023). Despite being less visible than chemical pollutants, noise pollution has insidious health effects that accumulate over time, compromising both physical and mental well-being.
The sources of noise pollution in Benue State are diverse. Urban centers are particularly affected by the continuous hum of traffic, construction activities, and industrial operations. Moreover, cultural and social practices that involve loud music and community gatherings further intensify ambient noise levels, especially during weekends and festive seasons (Aminu, 2024). Noise pollution not only disrupts daily life but also contributes to chronic health conditions, leading to increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity. Studies have linked prolonged noise exposure to increased levels of stress hormones, which in turn elevate the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
The urban poor, who often live in densely populated areas with inadequate sound insulation, are disproportionately affected by noise pollution. Additionally, children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to environmental stressors, experience a higher risk of noise-induced health effects. Despite these known risks, there remains a paucity of localized research on noise pollution in Benue State, hindering the development of targeted policies and interventions (Ibrahim, 2025).
This study intends to appraise the levels of noise pollution in Benue State and evaluate its health implications on the local population. By examining noise exposure and associated health outcomes, the research will provide critical data to inform policy decisions and improve urban planning strategies aimed at mitigating noise pollution.
Statement of the Problem :
Noise pollution in Benue State is an emerging environmental challenge that significantly impacts public health. The increasing levels of noise from traffic, industrial activities, and community events have led to heightened instances of hearing loss, stress, sleep disturbances, and cardiovascular problems. Despite growing concerns, there is limited empirical research on the specific health effects of noise pollution in the region (Garba, 2023). The absence of adequate noise monitoring systems and the lack of stringent regulatory measures further exacerbate the problem. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and low-income residents living near major noise sources, are particularly at risk.
The lack of public awareness about the health implications of excessive noise further contributes to the issue. Many residents remain unaware of the long-term consequences of chronic noise exposure, and policymakers have yet to implement effective noise control measures. This gap in research and policy has resulted in an environment where noise pollution continues unabated, affecting the quality of life and overall health of the community (Usman, 2024).
Without a comprehensive understanding of noise levels and their direct impact on health outcomes, interventions remain fragmented and insufficient. This study seeks to fill this critical gap by systematically evaluating noise pollution in Benue State and assessing its impact on residents’ health. The findings are expected to guide future policy reforms and urban planning initiatives that prioritize the reduction of noise pollution and improve public health outcomes.
