Background of the Study:
Access to clean water and proper sanitation is fundamental to public health, yet many communities in Adamawa State face significant challenges in this area. Rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient government investment have led to a shortage of safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities. These deficiencies are directly linked to the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, which continue to affect both rural and urban communities (Musa, 2023). The lack of reliable access to clean water and sanitation also undermines economic development, educational attainment, and overall quality of life.

In Adamawa State, many residents rely on untreated water sources, such as rivers and unprotected wells, which are vulnerable to contamination from industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and inadequate waste disposal practices. The resulting water contamination not only poses immediate health risks but also contributes to long-term developmental issues, particularly among children. The challenges of water scarcity and poor sanitation are further compounded by seasonal fluctuations and climate variability, which exacerbate water shortages during dry periods and lead to increased contamination during rainy seasons (Abubakar, 2024).

Efforts to improve water and sanitation infrastructure have been initiated by governmental and non-governmental organizations, yet the pace of progress remains slow. There is a critical need to assess the current state of access to clean water and sanitation in Adamawa State, identify the key barriers to improvement, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing interventions. This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of water and sanitation services in the region, examining both the infrastructural challenges and the socio-economic factors that influence access. By generating robust evidence, the research will support the development of targeted strategies to enhance water quality and sanitation facilities, ultimately contributing to improved public health and sustainable development in Adamawa State (Yakasai, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized importance of access to clean water and proper sanitation, Adamawa State continues to face significant challenges in providing these essential services to its population. Many communities, particularly in rural areas, lack adequate water infrastructure and rely on contaminated sources, resulting in a high incidence of waterborne diseases. Inadequate sanitation facilities further compound the problem by facilitating the spread of infections and contributing to environmental degradation (Garba, 2023). The limited progress in improving water and sanitation services is attributable to factors such as insufficient funding, poor maintenance of existing facilities, and inadequate policy implementation.

The adverse health outcomes associated with poor water quality and sanitation have a direct impact on community well-being, leading to increased healthcare costs, reduced productivity, and stunted economic development. Vulnerable populations, including children and low-income households, are particularly affected by these deficiencies. The lack of comprehensive and up-to-date data on water and sanitation access in Adamawa State hinders policymakers from designing effective interventions. Without targeted strategies, efforts to improve water quality and sanitation remain fragmented and insufficient to meet the needs of the population (Ibrahim, 2024).

This study seeks to address these gaps by systematically evaluating the current state of water and sanitation access in Adamawa State, identifying key challenges and barriers, and proposing evidence-based solutions. The ultimate goal is to support the development of sustainable policies and interventions that will enhance access to clean water and adequate sanitation, thereby improving public health outcomes and fostering socio-economic development in the region.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the current level of access to clean water and sanitation in Adamawa State.
  • To identify the key challenges and barriers affecting water and sanitation services.
  • To propose evidence-based recommendations for improving water quality and sanitation infrastructure.

Research Questions:

  • What is the current status of access to clean water and proper sanitation in Adamawa State?
  • What are the major challenges hindering effective water and sanitation services?
  • What interventions can significantly improve water quality and sanitation in the region?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Limited access to clean water and sanitation is significantly associated with higher rates of waterborne diseases.
  • H2: Socio-economic and infrastructural barriers are the primary factors limiting access to safe water and sanitation.
  • H3: Targeted policy interventions and infrastructural improvements will lead to significant enhancements in water and sanitation services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on selected rural and urban communities in Adamawa State, assessing access to clean water and sanitation. Limitations include potential data collection challenges due to geographical and infrastructural disparities and reliance on self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Clean Water: Water that is free from contaminants and safe for human consumption.
  • Sanitation: Facilities and services for the safe disposal of human waste.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms transmitted through contaminated water.
