ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on the assessment of the print media in the promotion of sports development in Nigeria with special reference to complete sport newspaper. Specifically, the study aims to know the contribution of print media to sport development, examine the challenges facing print media in reporting sport activities, study the aspect of sport which print media give priority and know why sport activities are usually placed at the back cover of both the newspaper and magazine. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that print media contribute to sport development in Nigeria. The study also revealed the challenges facing sport reporters and sport desk in reporting sport activities are political and economic pressure, job insecurity and attacks on the protection of journalists' sources, intimidation and censorship. The study further revealed Nigeria Sport reporters pay more attention to foreign sport activities than local sport because sport fans pay attention to foreign sport activities, because foreign sport has a financial gains more than the local sport, because foreign sport has a large fan base, more so, because foreign sport news is interesting. Lastly, the study revealed sports activities usually placed at the back cover of both the newspaper and magazine because the majority of people are right handed, majority of the readers are interested in starting their day with some interesting,majority of the readers are interested in starting their day with some interesting and majority of the readers are interested in starting their day with some interesting. The study thereby recommends that government should promote sports, as it cannot achieve its purpose unless it put in placed sports management experts to be at the helm of affairs of sports, this is only way forwards in which sports structure and management will received the co-operation of equally determined and devoted people in sports players/athletes.
