Background of the Study:
Cardiovascular health education is essential for preventing heart disease, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare services and health information may be limited. In Kano State, rural communities face significant challenges such as low health literacy, cultural barriers, and limited access to modern medical facilities. These challenges contribute to a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in rural areas (Aminu, 2023). Health education programs designed to promote awareness about heart-healthy lifestyles, early detection of symptoms, and risk factor management are critical in these settings.

Recent initiatives by both governmental and non-governmental organizations have aimed to improve cardiovascular health education through community outreach, mobile health clinics, and public health campaigns. Although these initiatives have shown promise, their overall effectiveness in changing health behaviors and improving cardiovascular outcomes in rural Kano remains largely unquantified (Suleiman, 2024). The diverse cultural norms and socio-economic conditions in rural Kano necessitate tailored educational strategies that resonate with local values and practices.

Furthermore, rural health education faces unique challenges such as language barriers, limited access to media, and low literacy levels, which can hinder the dissemination of vital health information. Evaluating the current state of cardiovascular health education in these communities is critical to understanding its impact on health behaviors. Such an evaluation will not only assess knowledge levels but also identify gaps in the content and delivery of educational programs. This research seeks to examine the effectiveness of existing cardiovascular health education programs, with a focus on community engagement and behavior change, to ultimately recommend strategies that can enhance the reach and impact of these initiatives (Bello, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized importance of cardiovascular health education, rural communities in Kano State continue to experience high rates of cardiovascular diseases due to limited awareness and insufficient health education. Many rural dwellers lack adequate knowledge about the risk factors and early symptoms of heart disease, which contributes to delayed diagnosis and treatment (Usman, 2023). Existing health education initiatives often adopt a generic approach that does not account for the unique socio-cultural context of rural Kano, leading to low program effectiveness and limited behavioral change.

Furthermore, barriers such as low literacy levels, traditional beliefs, and inadequate healthcare resources exacerbate the challenge. The absence of localized data evaluating the impact of these educational programs makes it difficult for policymakers to refine and tailor interventions effectively. Without a clear understanding of the shortcomings of current efforts, the high prevalence of CVDs in rural Kano is likely to persist, placing an additional burden on the already strained healthcare system (Yusuf, 2024).

This study aims to fill this gap by systematically evaluating the state of cardiovascular health education among rural dwellers in Kano State. It will investigate the accessibility, content, and delivery methods of existing programs and assess their influence on community health behaviors. Addressing this gap is critical for developing more effective, culturally sensitive, and accessible health education strategies that can significantly reduce cardiovascular risk in these underserved communities (Nnamdi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the current state of cardiovascular health education among rural dwellers in Kano State.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of existing educational programs in improving cardiovascular health knowledge and behaviors.
  • To recommend strategies for enhancing cardiovascular health education tailored to rural communities in Kano State.

Research Questions:

  • What is the current level of cardiovascular health knowledge among rural dwellers in Kano State?
  • How effective are existing educational programs in improving cardiovascular health behaviors?
  • What improvements can be made to enhance the delivery and impact of cardiovascular health education in rural Kano?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Rural dwellers exposed to targeted cardiovascular health education programs demonstrate significantly higher levels of heart health knowledge.
  • H2: Tailored educational interventions lead to measurable improvements in cardiovascular health behaviors.
  • H3: Involvement of community leaders in health education significantly enhances program effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on rural communities in selected areas of Kano State, evaluating cardiovascular health education initiatives. Limitations include potential variability in program implementation, cultural biases, and reliance on self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Cardiovascular Health Education: Programs designed to improve awareness and knowledge about heart health.
  • Rural Dwellers: Residents of non-urban areas with limited access to modern healthcare facilities.
  • Health Literacy: The capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information.
