Background of the Study
The advent of IoT technology has significantly transformed the healthcare sector by enabling remote patient monitoring, which is particularly crucial in areas with limited healthcare access. In Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, the implementation of IoT-based remote patient monitoring systems presents a promising opportunity to enhance patient care, especially for chronic disease management and elderly care. These systems employ a variety of sensors and wearable devices that continuously collect vital health data, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels, transmitting the information in real time to healthcare providers (Abubakar, 2023). This continuous monitoring facilitates early detection of health deteriorations, allowing for prompt medical interventions that can significantly improve patient outcomes (Fatima, 2024). Moreover, remote patient monitoring minimizes the need for frequent hospital visits, thereby reducing the burden on healthcare facilities and enabling efficient resource allocation. The integration of IoT in healthcare also promotes patient autonomy and enhances overall service quality by providing personalized care tailored to real-time health data (Umar, 2025). Despite these benefits, challenges remain in ensuring data security, system interoperability, and user acceptance, particularly among patients who may be unfamiliar with digital health technologies (Suleiman, 2023). Additionally, issues such as high implementation costs and the need for reliable internet connectivity further complicate the widespread adoption of these systems in Keffi LGA. Against this backdrop, this study aims to explore the potential of IoT-based remote patient monitoring to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Keffi LGA. By evaluating system performance, patient satisfaction, and the overall impact on healthcare outcomes, the research seeks to provide a framework for the effective implementation of smart healthcare solutions in regions with similar challenges.
Statement of the Problem
Healthcare facilities in Keffi LGA face significant challenges in delivering timely and effective care due to limited resources and an increasing burden of chronic diseases. Traditional patient monitoring methods, which rely on periodic check-ups and manual data recording, are inadequate for early detection and timely intervention, often resulting in deteriorating patient conditions (Bello, 2023). Although IoT-based remote patient monitoring systems have the potential to transform healthcare by providing continuous, real-time data, their adoption has been hindered by several factors. High initial setup costs, limited technical infrastructure, and concerns about data privacy and security have all contributed to the slow implementation of these technologies (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, a lack of familiarity with digital health solutions among both healthcare providers and patients has led to resistance in embracing these new systems. The absence of localized research evaluating the impact of IoT-based monitoring in rural and semi-urban settings like Keffi LGA further exacerbates this issue, leaving healthcare administrators uncertain about the return on investment. Consequently, despite the potential benefits of enhanced patient care and reduced hospital readmissions, the practical challenges of implementing IoT-based remote monitoring remain a significant barrier. This study intends to investigate the operational challenges and benefits associated with these systems, focusing on their impact on patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency. Without addressing these challenges, the full potential of smart healthcare solutions may remain untapped, thereby perpetuating the existing limitations in healthcare service delivery in Keffi LGA (Yusuf, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To design and implement an IoT-based remote patient monitoring system tailored for healthcare facilities in Keffi LGA.
To assess the impact of the system on patient health outcomes and hospital resource utilization.
To identify challenges in the adoption of remote patient monitoring and propose solutions to enhance system integration and security.
Research Questions
How does IoT-based remote patient monitoring improve healthcare delivery in Keffi LGA?
What are the key challenges encountered during its implementation in healthcare settings?
What strategies can be adopted to ensure data security and patient acceptance?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the integration of IoT-based remote patient monitoring into the healthcare system in Keffi LGA, offering a potential solution to overcome limitations in traditional patient care. By providing continuous health monitoring and early warning systems, the research aims to enhance patient outcomes, reduce hospital readmissions, and optimize resource allocation. The findings will serve as a guide for healthcare administrators and policymakers in implementing effective smart healthcare strategies, ultimately contributing to improved service delivery and patient satisfaction (Fatima, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of IoT-based remote patient monitoring systems in healthcare facilities in Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State. It focuses on system performance, patient outcomes, and implementation challenges. The results may not be generalizable to other regions or healthcare systems.
