Background of the Study
University libraries serve as vital repositories of knowledge, and ensuring their security and efficient management of access is paramount. In Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, many libraries still rely on traditional, manual methods of access control, which are often inefficient and susceptible to human error. IoT-based smart access control systems offer a promising alternative by integrating sensors, biometric scanners, and automated verification processes to regulate entry and exit. These systems provide real-time monitoring and data analytics that enhance security while also streamlining user access (Suleiman, 2023). The technology enables library administrators to manage access remotely and effectively, thereby reducing unauthorized entry and safeguarding valuable academic resources (Abdullahi, 2024). In addition to improved security, smart access control systems can generate usage data that help libraries optimize resource allocation and operational efficiency. By automating the access process, these systems also alleviate the administrative burden on staff, allowing them to focus on other core functions. Despite these advantages, the transition from conventional systems to IoT-based solutions is not without challenges. Issues such as high installation costs, integration difficulties with existing infrastructure, and concerns over data privacy have hindered widespread adoption in university libraries (Lawal, 2025). Furthermore, the user acceptance of such technologies remains uncertain, particularly among populations that are less familiar with digital security measures. This study aims to investigate the implementation process of IoT-based smart access control systems in university libraries, assess their impact on security and operational efficiency, and identify strategies to overcome the challenges faced during deployment. The research will provide valuable insights into how these systems can be tailored to meet the unique needs of academic libraries while ensuring that they remain accessible and user-friendly for all stakeholders.

Statement of the Problem
University libraries in Gusau LGA are currently challenged by inefficient access control methods that compromise security and hinder operational efficiency. The reliance on manual systems often results in delayed verification processes, unauthorized access, and increased vulnerability to theft or damage of valuable resources (Suleiman, 2023). The introduction of IoT-based smart access control systems promises enhanced security through automated, real-time monitoring; however, the implementation of such technologies in university libraries faces significant hurdles. High installation and maintenance costs, coupled with integration challenges with pre-existing systems, limit their adoption. Additionally, concerns regarding data privacy and the risk of cyber-attacks on access control systems further complicate the transition from traditional methods (Abdullahi, 2024). User resistance, stemming from unfamiliarity with advanced technologies and apprehension over biometric data usage, poses another significant barrier. Without comprehensive training and robust support systems, the effectiveness of these innovative solutions may be compromised (Lawal, 2025). Moreover, a lack of empirical research and case studies specific to the academic library environment creates uncertainty regarding the practical benefits and limitations of IoT-based access control in this context. As a result, university libraries may continue to rely on outdated and inefficient security measures, leaving critical assets at risk and impeding the smooth functioning of library services. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically evaluating the challenges and benefits associated with the implementation of IoT-based smart access control in university libraries, providing evidence-based recommendations for improving security protocols and operational efficiency.

Objectives of the Study

  • To implement an IoT-based smart access control system in university libraries.

  • To assess the impact of the system on library security and user accessibility.

  • To identify challenges in the deployment of smart access control systems and recommend improvements.

Research Questions

  • How does the IoT-based smart access control system enhance security in university libraries?

  • What are the operational challenges faced during the implementation of such a system?

  • What strategies can be developed to improve the efficiency and reliability of the access control system?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the application of IoT-based smart access control systems in university libraries, addressing the need for enhanced security and efficient access management. The findings will assist university administrators, librarians, and technology developers in adopting innovative solutions that balance security with user convenience, ultimately improving library operations and resource management (Niger, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the implementation and evaluation of IoT-based smart access control systems in university libraries within Gusau LGA, Zamfara State. It focuses on system performance, security enhancement, and operational challenges. The findings may not apply to other institutions.
