Background of the Study

Mobile health (mHealth) applications have emerged as innovative tools for improving disease management, particularly in resource-limited settings. In Yobe State, where access to healthcare facilities may be limited due to geographical and infrastructural challenges, mHealth solutions offer the potential to bridge the gap by providing remote monitoring, health education, and disease management support. These applications can assist in chronic disease management, appointment reminders, and real-time communication between patients and healthcare providers (Adamu, 2023; Suleiman & Mohammed, 2024). Early studies indicate that mHealth can lead to improved medication adherence, reduced hospital readmissions, and enhanced patient engagement. However, challenges such as technological literacy, network connectivity, and user trust may affect their effectiveness. This study will evaluate the role of mobile health applications in managing diseases in Yobe State by examining user adoption, clinical outcomes, and user satisfaction. The research aims to provide evidence on the efficacy of mHealth interventions and recommend strategies for scaling up these solutions in similar contexts.

Statement of the Problem

In Yobe State, many individuals face barriers to effective disease management due to limited access to healthcare facilities. Although mobile health applications have been introduced as a means to overcome these challenges, their adoption and effectiveness remain inconsistent. Issues such as low digital literacy, intermittent network coverage, and skepticism about digital health tools hinder widespread use. Consequently, the potential benefits of mHealth—such as improved chronic disease management and timely medical advice—are not fully realized. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive evaluation of these applications limits policymakers’ ability to integrate them into broader health systems. This study aims to investigate the current use of mobile health applications in Yobe State, evaluate their impact on disease management, and identify key factors affecting their success.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the adoption and usage patterns of mobile health applications in Yobe State.

2. To evaluate the impact of mHealth on disease management outcomes.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing the integration and effectiveness of mHealth solutions.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of adoption of mobile health applications in Yobe State?

2. How do these applications affect disease management and patient outcomes?

3. What barriers and facilitators influence the effective use of mHealth tools?

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher mHealth adoption is associated with improved disease management outcomes.

2. Technological and connectivity issues significantly hinder the effective use of mHealth applications.

3. Tailored training and infrastructure improvements will enhance mHealth efficacy.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on users of mobile health applications in both urban and rural areas of Yobe State. Data will be collected via user surveys, app usage analytics, and interviews with healthcare providers. Limitations include potential selection bias and variability in app functionality.

Definitions of Terms
