Background of the Study

Fast-food consumption has risen sharply in many developing regions, including Sokoto State, driven by urbanization, changing lifestyles, and aggressive marketing. While fast food offers convenience and affordability, its nutritional profile is often poor—high in calories, fats, sugars, and sodium—which can lead to adverse health outcomes such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic disorders (Aliyu, 2023; Mustapha, 2024). In Sokoto State, a growing number of individuals, particularly young adults and urban dwellers, have incorporated fast food into their daily diets. This shift in dietary patterns has raised concerns about the long-term health implications, as fast-food diets may displace more nutritious, traditional food options. Despite public health campaigns promoting healthier eating habits, fast-food consumption remains high, and its effects on nutritional health are not well documented locally. This study aims to evaluate the impact of fast-food consumption on nutritional health by analyzing dietary patterns, nutritional status indicators, and health outcomes in the population. The goal is to generate evidence that can inform policies and interventions to improve nutritional health in Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

In Sokoto State, the increasing consumption of fast food has raised significant public health concerns regarding nutritional health. Many residents are adopting dietary patterns that favor fast-food options, which are often energy-dense and nutrient-poor. This trend is associated with rising rates of obesity, hypertension, and other diet-related non-communicable diseases. Despite awareness of the potential risks, fast-food outlets continue to proliferate, and regulatory measures appear insufficient to curb this behavior. Additionally, there is limited local research examining the specific nutritional deficits resulting from fast-food consumption. The absence of targeted data hampers the development of effective nutritional policies and public health interventions. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the relationship between fast-food consumption and nutritional health outcomes in Sokoto State, thereby providing a basis for developing strategies to promote healthier eating habits.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the frequency and patterns of fast-food consumption among residents in Sokoto State.

2. To evaluate the nutritional health outcomes associated with fast-food consumption.

3. To recommend interventions to promote healthier dietary practices.

Research Questions

1. What are the patterns of fast-food consumption in Sokoto State?

2. How does frequent fast-food consumption affect nutritional health indicators?

3. What strategies can reduce fast-food consumption and improve nutritional health?

Research Hypotheses

1. High fast-food consumption is significantly associated with poor nutritional health outcomes.

2. Frequent fast-food intake is correlated with increased rates of obesity and metabolic disorders.

3. Public health interventions promoting traditional, nutritious diets will reduce fast-food consumption and improve nutritional health.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will target urban populations in Sokoto State. Data will be collected through dietary surveys, anthropometric measurements, and health assessments. Limitations include self-report bias and potential confounding variables such as physical activity levels.

Definitions of Terms

• Fast-Food Consumption: The frequency and quantity of meals obtained from fast-food outlets.

• Nutritional Health: The status of an individual’s health as influenced by the intake and balance of nutrients.

• Non-communicable Diseases: Chronic diseases not passed from person to person, often related to lifestyle factors.
