ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine agriculture with special reference to Enugu North local government area. Specifically, the study aims to find out areas of animal science component where agricultural science teachers require in-service training, find out the different modes of the in-service training suitable for the serving teachers of agricultural science in the schools and find out how agricultural science teachers can be motivated for effective teaching and learning of animal science in secondary schools. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the areas of animal science components of agriculture that require in-service training by the teachers of agricultural science in Secondary schools are applied animal physiology, breeding and genetics and livestock and poultry management. The study also revealed the different modes of the in-service training suitable for teachers of agricultural science in the schools are induction or orientation training, foundation training and on the job training. Lastly, the study revealed agricultural science teachers can be motivated for effective teaching and learning of animal science in secondary schools through opportunity to help students gain a sense of self-worth, adequate remuneration and Periodic in house training. The study thereby recommends that the government of Enugu State should recruit graduates (first degree holders) in agriculture to teach all agricultural education programmes in senior secondary schools as recommended by the national education policy makers in the country. Also, institutions responsible for training agriculture teachers for senior secondary schools in the State should consider revising their curriculum to incorporate the identified technical competencies in animal husbandry.
