Background of the Study

Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have been recognized globally as an effective intervention in reducing malaria transmission by providing a physical and chemical barrier against mosquito bites. In Katsina State, where malaria remains endemic, ITNs are a central component of national malaria control strategies. Numerous studies have demonstrated that widespread use of ITNs can significantly reduce malaria incidence and mortality rates (Usman, 2023; Gambo, 2024). However, the success of ITN programs depends not only on the distribution of nets but also on their correct and consistent usage by the target populations. Factors such as cultural beliefs, user comfort, and maintenance practices influence the overall effectiveness of ITNs.

Despite high coverage levels reported in many areas, gaps in utilization persist due to challenges like inadequate education on proper net use, physical deterioration of nets, and misuse for other purposes. Additionally, behavioral factors and seasonal variations in mosquito density may affect ITN usage patterns. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets in preventing malaria in Katsina State by integrating quantitative data on malaria incidence with qualitative assessments of net usage behavior. The findings will inform future strategies to improve the distribution, education, and maintenance of ITNs, thereby enhancing their overall impact on malaria prevention.

Statement of the Problem

In Katsina State, despite significant investments in insecticide-treated net distribution programs, malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. While ITNs are known to reduce malaria transmission, several challenges undermine their effectiveness. Many households report irregular use of ITNs due to factors such as discomfort in hot weather, lack of proper education regarding usage, and the physical deterioration of nets over time. These issues, compounded by cultural practices and seasonal changes in mosquito activity, result in suboptimal protection against malaria. Furthermore, the lack of regular monitoring and evaluation of ITN programs hampers the ability of health authorities to identify and address gaps in net utilization. This study aims to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of ITNs by assessing both coverage and actual usage, with the goal of identifying critical barriers to optimal protection and proposing strategies to improve their impact in Katsina State (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the distribution and usage patterns of insecticide-treated nets in Katsina State.

2. To evaluate the impact of ITN usage on malaria incidence in the region.

3. To recommend strategies for improving ITN utilization and maintenance.

Research Questions

1. What are the current coverage and utilization rates of ITNs in Katsina State?

2. How does consistent ITN use affect malaria incidence in the region?

3. What barriers hinder optimal ITN use and how can they be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

1. Households that consistently use ITNs experience lower malaria incidence.

2. Inadequate education on proper ITN use is significantly associated with reduced effectiveness.

3. Improved ITN maintenance and targeted education programs will enhance their protective benefits.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on both rural and urban communities in Katsina State with active ITN distribution programs. Data will be collected through household surveys, health facility records, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-report bias and seasonal variability in net usage.

Definitions of Terms

• Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs): Mosquito nets treated with insecticides to reduce malaria transmission.

• Malaria Incidence: The number of new malaria cases occurring in a defined population over a specified period.

• Utilization: The extent to which ITNs are used correctly and consistently.
