Background of the Study

Noise pollution, an often-overlooked environmental hazard, has significant implications for public health. In Niger State, rapid urbanization and increased industrial activity have led to elevated noise levels in residential and commercial areas. Prolonged exposure to high noise levels has been associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and increased stress levels, which in turn may contribute to cardiovascular problems (Chukwu, 2023; Umar & Garba, 2024). Urban centers in Niger State face persistent noise pollution from traffic, construction, and industrial operations, affecting the quality of life and overall well-being of residents. Although regulatory measures exist to control noise levels, enforcement is often lax, and public awareness of the health impacts remains low. This study will investigate the extent of noise pollution and its relationship with public health outcomes by integrating noise monitoring data with health surveys and interviews. The goal is to elucidate the health implications of noise pollution and to provide recommendations for noise management and public health protection (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

In Niger State, uncontrolled noise pollution poses a significant threat to public health, yet its impacts are frequently underestimated. Residents in urban areas are exposed to high decibel levels on a daily basis, which can lead to chronic stress, hearing impairment, and sleep disturbances. These issues not only reduce the quality of life but also contribute to the development of more severe health conditions over time. The absence of stringent noise regulation and limited public education on the health effects of noise pollution exacerbate the problem. Furthermore, the interplay between noise exposure and other environmental stressors complicates the assessment of its overall impact on health. There is a pressing need for comprehensive studies that quantify the levels of noise pollution and correlate them with specific health outcomes. This study aims to address this gap by examining the effects of noise pollution on public health in Niger State and proposing effective mitigation strategies (Lawal, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

• To measure ambient noise levels in selected urban areas of Niger State.

• To evaluate the health effects of prolonged noise exposure on local residents.

• To recommend policy interventions and public health strategies to reduce noise pollution.

Research Questions

• What are the ambient noise levels in urban areas of Niger State?

• How does chronic noise exposure affect the health of residents?

• What measures can effectively mitigate the negative health impacts of noise pollution?

Research Hypotheses

• Elevated ambient noise levels are associated with increased health complaints among residents.

• Chronic exposure to high noise levels significantly correlates with hearing loss and stress-related disorders.

• Implementation of noise control policies will lead to measurable improvements in public health.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on urban centers in Niger State, integrating noise monitoring with health surveys and interviews. Limitations include potential variability in individual noise exposure and difficulties in isolating noise effects from other environmental factors.

Definitions of Terms

• Noise Pollution: Unwanted or harmful outdoor sound created by human activities.

• Ambient Noise: The background sound present in an environment.

• Public Health: The science and practice of protecting and improving community health.
