Background of the Study
The gut microbiome, consisting of trillions of microorganisms living in the human gastrointestinal tract, plays a critical role in health and disease. Metagenomic sequencing, which involves the direct analysis of microbial genomes from environmental samples, has emerged as a powerful tool for studying the gut microbiome (Brown et al., 2023). The composition and diversity of the gut microbiome are influenced by genetics, diet, lifestyle, and geography, with significant variations observed across different populations (Ogunbanjo et al., 2024). In Nigeria, the gut microbiome remains an underexplored area, despite its implications for diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease (Nwankwo et al., 2024).

Recent advancements in bioinformatics have enabled the analysis of complex metagenomic datasets, revealing insights into microbial diversity, functional capabilities, and interactions with the host (Adekunle et al., 2023). Studies have shown that the gut microbiome in African populations, including Nigeria, is distinct due to unique dietary habits and environmental factors (Afolabi et al., 2024). Sokoto State University, with its commitment to scientific research, provides an ideal platform for conducting metagenomic studies on the Nigerian gut microbiome. This study aims to analyze metagenomic sequencing data to understand the composition, diversity, and functional potential of the gut microbiome in Nigerians, contributing to personalized medicine and public health interventions.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of the gut microbiome's role in health, there is limited research on the Nigerian gut microbiome due to challenges in accessing advanced sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools (Okon et al., 2023). The lack of comprehensive metagenomic studies in Nigeria hampers the understanding of microbial contributions to health and disease, particularly in a population with unique dietary and environmental exposures (Olatunji et al., 2024).

Current bioinformatics tools for metagenomic analysis are often designed for Western populations, leading to potential biases when applied to Nigerian data (Adeyemo et al., 2024). Without localized studies, the development of microbiome-based therapies and diagnostics remains challenging. This study addresses these gaps by implementing bioinformatics tools for analyzing metagenomic sequencing data from the Nigerian population, providing insights into the gut microbiome’s role in health and disease and supporting the development of tailored healthcare solutions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze metagenomic sequencing data of the Nigerian gut microbiome using bioinformatics tools.

  2. To identify microbial diversity and functional capabilities within the Nigerian gut microbiome.

  3. To assess the impact of diet and lifestyle on gut microbiome composition in Nigerians.

Research Questions

  1. What is the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome in the Nigerian population?

  2. How do bioinformatics tools enhance the analysis of metagenomic sequencing data?

  3. What role do diet and lifestyle play in shaping the gut microbiome in Nigerians?

Significance of the Study
This study will provide a comprehensive analysis of the Nigerian gut microbiome, contributing to the global understanding of microbial diversity. It will enhance the research capabilities of Sokoto State University, support the development of personalized medicine, and promote microbiome-based interventions for improving public health in Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of metagenomic sequencing data for studying the gut microbiome in Nigerians at Sokoto State University, Sokoto State.
