Background of the Study
In today’s interconnected digital landscape, real-time cyber attack prevention is critical for protecting national infrastructure and sensitive data. The Nigerian Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in Abuja is at the forefront of defending the country against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. With the rapid advancement of quantum computing, traditional cybersecurity measures are becoming insufficient to counter emerging threats. Quantum computing, with its ability to process vast amounts of data simultaneously and execute complex algorithms rapidly, offers a promising solution for real-time threat detection and prevention (Ibrahim, 2024). Quantum-enhanced cybersecurity systems can analyze network traffic, detect anomalies, and predict attack vectors in real time, thereby reducing response times and mitigating potential damage (Okoro, 2023). This study investigates the implementation of quantum computing technologies within the NCSC to bolster its defense mechanisms against cyber attacks. The research will explore the integration of quantum algorithms into existing cybersecurity frameworks, examine their effectiveness in detecting and neutralizing threats, and assess the operational challenges associated with their deployment. By leveraging quantum computing, the NCSC can enhance its capability to identify zero-day vulnerabilities, monitor high-speed data flows, and respond to cyber incidents proactively (Adeniyi, 2024). This transformative approach not only aims to improve national cybersecurity but also sets a benchmark for the global adoption of quantum-enhanced defense systems. The study also examines policy implications, resource allocation, and the potential for public–private partnerships to support the sustainable integration of quantum computing in cybersecurity (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian Cyber Security Centre is currently challenged by the limitations of classical computing in detecting and preventing rapidly evolving cyber attacks. Traditional security systems struggle to analyze massive volumes of data in real time, leaving critical infrastructure exposed to advanced persistent threats (Emeka, 2023). As cyber attackers increasingly employ sophisticated techniques, the inability of existing systems to rapidly detect and mitigate these threats has led to several security breaches. Furthermore, the integration of quantum computing into cybersecurity frameworks is hindered by technical complexities, high implementation costs, and a shortage of specialized personnel. This technological gap not only compromises the integrity of national digital assets but also erodes public confidence in cybersecurity measures. The study aims to address these challenges by evaluating the potential of quantum computing to transform real-time cyber attack prevention. By assessing the performance of quantum algorithms and their integration within current security systems, the research seeks to develop a comprehensive framework that enhances threat detection, reduces response times, and mitigates cyber risks effectively (Nwankwo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of quantum computing in real-time cyber attack prevention at the NCSC.

  2. To identify the technical challenges and integration barriers of quantum-enhanced cybersecurity systems.

  3. To propose a strategic framework for implementing quantum computing solutions for proactive cyber defense.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum computing improve real-time detection and prevention of cyber attacks?

  2. What are the technical challenges associated with integrating quantum algorithms into current cybersecurity frameworks?

  3. What strategic framework can be developed to support the implementation of quantum-enhanced cyber defense systems?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative potential of quantum computing to bolster real-time cyber attack prevention at the Nigerian Cyber Security Centre. The findings will provide critical insights for policymakers and cybersecurity professionals, guiding the integration of advanced quantum solutions to protect national digital infrastructure and enhance proactive threat management.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the implementation of quantum computing for real-time cyber attack prevention at the Nigerian Cyber Security Centre in Abuja, focusing on the stated objectives, existing cybersecurity frameworks, and selected Local Government Areas only.
