Background of the Study
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that has significant psychological repercussions, particularly for women. In Sokoto State, cultural, socio-economic, and gender dynamics contribute to high rates of domestic violence, leaving many women vulnerable to a range of mental health disorders. Victims of domestic violence often experience depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and diminished self-esteem. These mental health challenges can be long-lasting and may severely impact a woman's overall quality of life and ability to function in society (Aliyu, 2023).
The psychological impact of domestic violence extends beyond immediate emotional distress. Chronic exposure to abuse can alter brain chemistry and disrupt normal stress responses, resulting in persistent mental health issues. Women in Sokoto State frequently face additional barriers such as social stigma, economic dependency, and limited access to mental health services, all of which exacerbate the impact of abuse. The cultural context in Sokoto often discourages victims from speaking out or seeking help, further entrenching the cycle of violence and mental distress (Ibrahim, 2024).
Despite growing awareness of the issue, there remains a lack of comprehensive research focusing on the psychological effects of domestic violence on women in Sokoto State. Understanding these impacts is crucial for developing effective support services and policy interventions that can help mitigate the adverse mental health outcomes. This study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining standardized psychological assessments with in-depth interviews to explore the lived experiences of domestic violence survivors. The goal is to provide a detailed analysis of how domestic violence affects mental health and to offer recommendations for improving mental health support and legal protections for women (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Domestic violence in Sokoto State poses a serious threat to the mental health of women. Many victims experience chronic psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD, yet due to cultural stigmas and limited support services, these issues often remain unaddressed. The pervasive social acceptance of domestic violence, coupled with economic dependency and inadequate legal protection, leaves many women trapped in abusive environments, exacerbating their mental health challenges (Aliyu, 2023). The lack of accessible mental health services further compounds the problem, as survivors are often unable to receive the necessary psychological care and counseling.
The absence of effective intervention strategies and support systems means that the psychological impact of domestic violence remains a hidden crisis in Sokoto State. With few resources available to address mental health needs, many women suffer in silence, leading to long-term consequences that affect not only their individual well-being but also the broader community. This situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive research that can illuminate the extent of the psychological harm caused by domestic violence and inform the development of targeted mental health and social support programs (Ibrahim, 2024).
This study seeks to address these issues by systematically evaluating the psychological impact of domestic violence on women in Sokoto State. Through the use of validated mental health assessments and qualitative interviews, the research aims to quantify the prevalence of mental health disorders among survivors and explore the factors that exacerbate their conditions. The findings will be used to develop evidence-based recommendations for policy changes and intervention programs that can effectively support domestic violence survivors and improve their mental health outcomes.

Research Hypotheses
- H1: Domestic violence is significantly associated with higher rates of depression and anxiety among women.

- H3: Targeted mental health support programs will reduce psychological distress among survivors.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on women in urban and rural areas of Sokoto State who have experienced domestic violence. Data will be collected using standardized mental health questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Limitations include potential underreporting due to stigma and difficulties in reaching certain populations.
