Background of the Study
Diabetes prevention is a critical public health priority, and lifestyle factors, particularly diet and exercise, play a central role in mitigating its risk. In Yobe State, increasing rates of diabetes have been linked to unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity. The adoption of a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, combined with regular physical activity, has been shown to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes significantly (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
In Yobe State, rapid socio-economic changes have led to shifts in dietary patterns, with a greater consumption of processed foods and sugary beverages, and a decline in physical activity due to sedentary lifestyles. These changes contribute to obesity, a major risk factor for diabetes. Public health campaigns promoting healthy eating and active living have had mixed results, often hampered by cultural preferences, economic constraints, and limited access to recreational facilities (Chukwu, 2024).
This study aims to explore the role of diet and exercise in preventing diabetes in Yobe State by examining the dietary patterns and physical activity levels of individuals at risk. It will evaluate the effectiveness of existing lifestyle interventions and identify barriers to adopting healthy behaviors. The findings are expected to inform the development of tailored interventions that promote a balanced diet and regular exercise, ultimately reducing diabetes incidence and improving overall public health outcomes in the state.
Statement of the Problem
In Yobe State, the prevalence of diabetes is on the rise, largely due to unhealthy lifestyle choices, including poor dietary habits and insufficient physical activity. Many residents consume diets high in refined sugars and fats while engaging in minimal exercise, leading to an increase in obesity and insulin resistance. Despite the known benefits of a balanced diet and regular exercise in preventing diabetes, adoption of these healthy practices remains low (Lawal, 2023).
Existing public health interventions have not sufficiently addressed the cultural and economic barriers that prevent widespread adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors. Limited access to affordable, nutritious food and safe spaces for exercise further exacerbate the problem, particularly in rural and low-income areas. The resulting high incidence of diabetes places a significant burden on the healthcare systemand compromises the quality of life for many individuals.
This study seeks to investigate the role of diet and exercise in diabetes prevention in Yobe State. By examining the relationship between lifestyle factors and diabetes risk, the research aims to identify key barriers to healthy behaviors and propose targeted strategies to promote diet and exercise interventions. Addressing these issues is crucial for reducing the incidence of diabetes and improving overall health outcomes in Yobe State.
