Background of the Study
Obesity is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and its prevalence among women has been increasing globally. In Kogi State, changes in lifestyle, dietary habits, and physical activity levels have contributed to rising obesity rates, particularly among women. This trend is concerning because obesity increases the likelihood of developing hypertension, coronary artery disease, and other cardiovascular conditions (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Women in Kogi State face unique socio-cultural and economic challenges that may predispose themto obesity and subsequent cardiovascular risk. Traditional gender roles, limited opportunities for physical activity, and cultural dietary practices can all contribute to weight gain. Furthermore, women often bear the brunt of household responsibilities, leaving little time for exercise and self-care. Studies have demonstrated that obesity in women is strongly associated with increased cardiovascular risk, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions that address both weight management and heart health (Chukwu, 2024).
This study aims to investigate the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular risk among women in Kogi State. It will examine anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, lipid profiles, and other relevant biomarkers to assess cardiovascular risk. Additionally, the research will explore lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and socio-economic status to understand their contribution to obesity and CVD. The findings will inform public health strategies tailored to the needs of women in Kogi State, with the goal of reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease through effective obesity management.
Statement of the Problem
In Kogi State, the increasing prevalence of obesity among women is a major public health concern due to its strong association with cardiovascular disease. Despite growing awareness of the health risks, many women continue to experience high rates of obesity, leading to elevated levels of blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Socio-cultural factors, such as limited opportunities for physical activity and traditional dietary habits, further exacerbate this issue, leaving women particularly vulnerable to heart-related complications (Lawal, 2023).
Current public health interventions may not adequately address the specific needs of women in Kogi State, and there is a lack of comprehensive data linking obesity to cardiovascular outcomes in this population. The gap in research hinders the development of targeted strategies that can effectively reduce both obesity and cardiovascular risk among women. Without timely intervention, the continued rise in obesity could lead to increased morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases, placing a significant burden on the healthcare system.
This study seeks to address these challenges by investigating the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular risk among women in Kogi State. The research will identify key risk factors and examine the contribution of lifestyle and socio-economic variables to this relationship. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for designing effective interventions aimed at improving cardiovascular health among women and ultimately reducing the prevalence of obesity-related complications.
