Background of the Study
Social media has transformed the way people communicate and interact, but its impact on mental health is a growing concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults in Taraba State. While social media platforms offer opportunities for social connection and information sharing, excessive use has been linked to increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress (Suleiman, 2023). In Taraba State, the rapid proliferation of smartphones and internet access has led to widespread social media use, influencing the mental health of users in both positive and negative ways.
Research indicates that prolonged exposure to social media can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and social isolation, as users often compare their lives to the curated images presented online (Aliyu, 2023). Conversely, social media can also serve as a platform for mental health support and awareness, facilitating connections with peers and access to mental health resources. However, the net effect on mental well-being appears to be more detrimental, particularly among vulnerable populations such as adolescents, who are more susceptible to peer pressure and cyberbullying (Ibrahim, 2024).
In Taraba State, cultural and socio-economic factors may further modulate the impact of social media on mental health. Limited mental health resources and stigma associated with mental illness compound the negative effects of social media use, making it difficult for individuals to seek help. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological adoption without adequate digital literacy programs has left many users ill-equipped to manage their online experiences effectively.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of social media use on mental health in Taraba State by examining patterns of social media consumption and their association with mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and stress. A mixed-methods approach will be utilized, including surveys to quantify social media usage and standardized mental health assessments, alongside in-depth interviews to capture personal experiences and perceptions. The study seeks to inform policy and educational initiatives that can mitigate the negative impacts of social media on mental well-being (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Taraba State, mental health issues among youth and young adults have been on the rise, coinciding with the increased use of social media. Despite its benefits, excessive social media use has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and stress. Many individuals, especially adolescents, are exposed to cyberbullying, unrealistic social comparisons, and addictive online behaviors, which contribute to deteriorating mental health (Suleiman, 2023). The lack of mental health education and limited access to professional counseling further exacerbate the situation.
The challenge is compounded by socio-cultural norms that stigmatize mental illness, preventing individuals from seeking help. Additionally, the rapid growth in social media use has outpaced the development of digital literacy programs, leaving users vulnerable to the negative effects of online interactions. Without a clear understanding of how social media influences mental health in the local context, it is difficult to design effective interventions that protect vulnerable populations and promote digital well-being (Ibrahim, 2024).
This study aims to address these issues by systematically examining the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes in Taraba State. Through comprehensive surveys and qualitative interviews, the research will identify the factors that mediate this relationship and propose strategies to mitigate adverse effects. The findings will be crucial for developing targeted public health policies and educational programs aimed at improving mental health literacy and reducing the harmful impacts of social media.
