Background of the Study
Mobile network security is a cornerstone of modern communication, especially in regions where mobile telecommunications serve as the primary medium for connectivity. MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, operates an extensive mobile network across Kano State, where ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of data transmitted over the network is critical. With the rapid advancement of quantum computing, traditional cryptographic methods used to secure mobile networks are at risk of being compromised (Olawale, 2023). Quantum cryptography, which employs principles such as quantum key distribution (QKD), offers a revolutionary solution by providing encryption methods that are theoretically impervious to quantum attacks. This advanced approach not only strengthens data security but also enhances the overall resilience of mobile communication networks (Afolabi, 2024).

The integration of quantum cryptography into mobile network security systems holds the promise of mitigating potential vulnerabilities that arise from the increasing computational power of quantum devices. Current encryption protocols, based on classical algorithms, may be insufficient to fend off future threats, potentially exposing sensitive user data and network integrity. Recent studies highlight that quantum cryptographic methods can provide real-time detection of eavesdropping attempts, thereby preventing unauthorized access and data breaches (Umar, 2024). Additionally, the dynamic nature of mobile networks, characterized by high data traffic and diverse user demands, necessitates an encryption system that can operate efficiently under varied conditions. Despite these promising prospects, the practical implementation of quantum cryptography in large-scale mobile networks faces challenges such as high costs, integration issues with legacy systems, and the need for continuous technical support. This study investigates the feasibility and benefits of deploying quantum cryptography within MTN Nigeria’s mobile network infrastructure in Kano State, aiming to develop a secure, robust, and scalable system that can adapt to emerging cyber threats (Bello, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
MTN Nigeria’s mobile network in Kano State is confronted with the escalating threat of cyber-attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in traditional encryption systems. The current security protocols, while effective against conventional threats, are increasingly at risk due to the advent of quantum computing. As quantum devices evolve, the encryption methods that secure mobile communications may become susceptible to decryption, exposing sensitive customer data and jeopardizing network integrity (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the extensive user base and high volume of data transmitted across the network amplify these vulnerabilities, making robust security measures a critical necessity. The challenge is further compounded by the technical complexities associated with integrating quantum cryptographic techniques into existing mobile infrastructure. Limited empirical research on the operational performance of quantum-based encryption in a commercial mobile network setting creates uncertainties regarding its scalability and cost-effectiveness (Okeke, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by evaluating the potential of quantum cryptography to enhance mobile network security at MTN Nigeria. It will examine current security gaps, assess the feasibility of quantum integration, and identify strategies to overcome technical barriers. The ultimate goal is to develop a framework that fortifies the mobile network against quantum-enabled cyber threats, ensuring secure and uninterrupted communication services for users in Kano State (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current vulnerabilities in MTN Nigeria’s mobile network security in Kano State.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of quantum cryptography in mitigating identified security risks.

  3. To develop a strategic framework for the integration of quantum cryptographic techniques into MTN Nigeria’s mobile network infrastructure.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary security vulnerabilities in MTN Nigeria’s mobile network?

  2. How effective are quantum cryptographic techniques in addressing these vulnerabilities?

  3. What strategies can be employed to successfully integrate quantum cryptography into the existing mobile network security framework?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the potential of quantum cryptography to enhance mobile network security at MTN Nigeria in Kano State. By addressing critical vulnerabilities and providing a strategic framework for integration, the research will contribute to the development of a more secure and resilient communication infrastructure. The outcomes are expected to guide policymakers and industry stakeholders in adopting advanced security measures that safeguard sensitive data and ensure reliable mobile network services (Olu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to enhancing mobile network security using quantum cryptography at MTN Nigeria in Kano State, focusing on the stated objectives, current security challenges, and selected Local Government Areas only.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Quantum Cryptography: A branch of cryptography that uses quantum mechanics to secure data communications against unauthorized access.

  2. Mobile Network Security: The measures and protocols implemented to protect data transmitted over mobile telecommunication networks.

  3. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD): A secure communication method that uses quantum properties to distribute encryption keys, ensuring the detection of any interception attempts.
